Antbears and underground melons: A highly specialized seed dispersal mutualism mediated by scent

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Seed dispersal is critical for the establishment and persistence of populations of most plant species. We investigated the seed dispersal biology of an African melon, Cucumis humifructus, which is closely related to cultivated cucumbers and watermelons but differs in that it buries its fruits deep underground.

Discriminating footprints to improve identification of congeneric invasive Rattus species

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
We used linear discriminant analyses and extreme gradient boosting to distinguish tracking tunnel footprints between two congeneric invasive rat species. Predictive accuracies of the models were ≥ 94%, suggesting the reliability of using tracking tunnels and machine learning algorithms to identify Pacific and ship rats. Silicon fertilization in maize increases attractiveness of nocturnal herbivore‐induced plant volatiles to Spodoptera frugiperda natural enemies

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Silicon (Si) fertilization enhances the attractiveness of plant volatiles emitted by fall armyworm‐infested maize plant to the predatory earwig Doru luteipes by triggering the emission of the terpene neryl acetate. Abstract BACKGROUND Silicon (Si) fertilization has been well‐documented to enhance plant resistance against insect pests by increasing the ...

The extreme short‐term rainfall rate as caused by a convective storm under a beneficial dynamic pattern

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
In this study, a nocturnal extreme rainfall event was examined by using cloud‐permitting simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting model. We proposed a mechanism for extreme short‐term rainfall formation under a beneficial dynamic pattern within a convective storm, and the mechanism is confirmed by a trajectory analysis of raindrops based ...
