Escape into the third dimension in cholesteric liquid crystals

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics
Integer winding disclinations are unstable in a nematic and are removed by an ‘escape into the third dimension’, resulting in a non-singular texture. This process is frustrated in a cholesteric material due to the requirement of maintaining a uniform ...

Multi-Frontal Solver For Simulations Of Linear Elasticity Coupled With Acoustics

open access: yesComputer Science, 2011
This paper describes the concurrent multi-frontal direct solver algorithm for a multi-physicsFinite Element Method (FEM). The multi-physics FEM utilizes different element sizes aswell as polynomial orders of approximation over element edges, faces, and ...

Optimised access to user analysis data using the gLite DPM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The ScotGrid distributed Tier-2 now provides more that 4MSI2K and 500TB for LHC computing, which is spread across three sites at Durham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Tier-2 sites have a dual role to play in the computing models of the LHC VOs.

Establishing breather and N-soliton solutions for conformable Klein–Gordon equation

open access: yesOpen Physics
This article develops and investigates the behavior of soliton solutions for the spatiotemporal conformable Klein–Gordon equation (CKGE), a well-known mathematical physics model that accounts for spinless pion and de-Broglie waves.

Chimera state in coupled map lattice of matrices

open access: yesLietuvos Matematikos Rinkinys, 2021
In recent years, a lot of research has focused on understanding the behavior of when synchronous and asynchronous phases occur, that is, the existence of chimera states in various networks.

Strong scaling of general-purpose molecular dynamics simulations on GPUs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We describe a highly optimized implementation of MPI domain decomposition in a GPU-enabled, general-purpose molecular dynamics code, HOOMD-blue (Anderson and Glotzer, arXiv:1308.5587).

Enlarged Epitrochlear Lymph Nodes: An Old Physical Sign Revisited

open access: yesJournal of the Royal College of Physicians of London, 1992
Few doctors routinely examine the epitrochlear glands as part of their physical examination of a patient. No palpable epitrochlear nodes were detected in 140 healthy subjects, but palpable epitrochlear nodes were present in 27% of 184 patients with diseases in which lymphadenopathy occurs.

A Wearable Wireless Sensor Network Node for Prevention of Physical Injuries [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Emerging Technologies in Computing, 2019
The economic burden of healthcare provision is continually rising. To combat this, targeted preventative measures have been proposed, together with encouragement of healthier lifestyle, enhanced health data collection and empowerment of patients in disease prevention and monitoring.

Weather-Aware Wake-Up of Sleeping Cyber-Physical IoT Nodes

open access: yes2023 19th International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things (DCOSS-IoT), 2023
Cyber-physical IoT nodes located in environments which are resource-constrained and physically hard to access, like the Arctic tundra, must achieve long operational lifetimes from a single battery and report data over data networks. The nodes sleep most of the time, and only wake up to perform mission tasks, including reporting data.
