Local Oscillator Noise Affects Noise Figure Measurement Accuracy
39th ARFTG Conference Digest, 1992Noise figure measurements are affected by amplitude modulated noise from local oscillators used in noise figure test systems. When testing microwave amplifiers or mixers/receivers, an external local oscillator(LO) is needed. For microwave amplifiers, the LO downconverts the noise to the noise figure meter's frequency range; while for mixers/receivers ...

Noise figure and gain of HEMTs vs. bias conditions measured by noise figure test-set
Proceedings of the 3rd IEEE International Workshop on High Performance Electron Devices for Microwave and Optoelectronic Applications, EDMO 95, 2002Noise figure and gain measurements of low noise transistors vs. bias conditions have to be performed by manufacturers/users in order to suggest/select the best bias from either noise or gain viewpoint, or a good noise-gain compromise. Some HEMT have been tested at different bias conditions by using a simple noise and gain test setup described in the ...

Proceedings of the IRE, 1948
The subject matter of this paper first appeared in the form of laboratory reports. Outside interest in these reports prompted the preparation of the material for publication. Despite the attention given to noise and noise figures in the literature, the basic concepts are still little understood by the average engineer.

Traveling-Wave Tube Noise Figure
Proceedings of the IRE, 1952The reduction of shot noise by space charge at high frequencies in a parallel-plane diode was predicted by Rack. Neglecting space charge and circuit loss, Pierce has employed Rack's method in estimating the noise figure of the traveling-wave tube. In the present paper, use is made of the Hahn-Ramo space-charge waves together with Pierce's theory to ...

Noise Figures of Radio Receivers
Proceedings of the IRE, 1944A rigorous definition of the noise figure of radio receivers is given in this paper. The definition is not limited to high-gain receivers, but can be applied to four-terminal networks in general. An analysis is made of the relationship between the noise figure of the receiver as a whole and the noise figures of its components.

Microwave Noise-Figure Measurement for Small Noise Output ( Correspondence)
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 1962The purpose of this communication is to propose a new method of noise-figure measurement for a microwave amplifier of small noise output. The new method is helpful when the accuracy of a conventional method is not satisfactory.

Appendix 2: Noise figure review
1984For many years, it has been possible to build electronic amplifiers with an almost unlimited gain. If it were not for the effects of noise and interference, it would be possible to amplify the weakest of signals to any required level. Communication and radar systems would use low-power transmitters and would no longer be limited in range.
