On the Importance of Noise Figure in Reflectivity Radars

1992
The paper considers the effect of thermal noise in reflectivity meteorological radars, where the objective is to estimate the power of the backscattered signal. It studies particularly the quadratic and the logarithmic receivers.

Investigation of noise reflections using test signals

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2000
Repeatable test signals for use with a loudspeaker system were generated to investigate noise reflections from traffic noise barrier walls. Four classes of signals were considered: impulses, maximum-length sequences, pseudorandom binary sequences, and linear frequency-modulated sine waves or chirps. Overall, the chirps yielded the most information from

Simulating complex noise barrier reflections

2011
Within the EU FP7 QUIESST project, QUIeting the Environment for a Sustainable Surface Transport, a test method is being developed for the reflectivity of noise barriers. The method needs to account for a complex shape of barriers and the use of various types of absorbing materials.

Reykjanes ambient noise reflection interferometry

2016
We present results from the application of ambient noise seismic interferometry (ANSI) to data that were recorded continuously in 2014 and 2015 at Iceland’s peninsula Reykjanes. The objective of this study is the retrieval of reflected body waves (P-waves) that provide high-resolution velocity-versus-depth as well as subsurface structural information ...

The concept of noise revisited: some reflections on music

2007
This article examines the distinction between noise and sound by following Jacques Attali’s critique which he matured in his classical work, Noise: The political economy of music. The main concern in revisiting the issue is the premise that the duality between noise and sound bears some significant implications for the difference between western and ...

The effect of reflecting panels on the efficiency of railway noise barriers

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
Noise barriers containing transparent elements may suffer from a reduced shielding effect due to increased multiple reflections between vehicle and barrier. Using mostly simulations, different factors have been identified previously influencing this effect, e.g., size and position of reflecting portions.
