Sensitivity, Noise and Resolution

2013
In this chapter we will develop models for calculating the noise, sensitivity and resolution of arbitrary piezoresistive sensors. Sensor resolution is defined as the smallest signal that can be reliably detected. The minimum detectable signal without averaging multiple trials is commonly equated to the root mean square (RMS) noise of the measurand ...

Sensor spectral sensitivities, noise measurements, and color sensitivity

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
This article proposes new measurements for evaluating the image quality of a camera, particularly on the reproduction of colors. The concept of gamut is usually a topic of interest, but it is much more adapted to output devices than to capture devices (sensors). Moreover, it does not take other important characteristics of the camera into account, such

A tutorial on noise-sensitivity.

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
About one in five people can be categorized as “noise-sensitive.” An individual’s degree of noise-sensitivity appears to be a personal characteristic, not an acquired attitude. Because environmental noise assessments within the United States are based on average response to noise, the existence of noise-sensitive people can be a challenge for land-use ...

Reversibility and noise sensitivity of Josephson arrays

Physical Review Letters, 1991
We predict that series arrays of point-contact Josephson junctions, shunted by a resistive load, should be unusually sensitive to noise. This behavior stems from a dynamical symmetry which prohibits the ex- istence of in-phase attractors. Simulations verify that breaking the symmetry can radically improve the phase-locking performance of the array.

The minimax noise sensitivity in compressed sensing

2013 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, 2013
Consider the compressed sensing problem of estimating an unknown k-sparse n-vector from a set of m noisy linear equations. Recent work focused on the noise sensitivity of particular algorithms - the scaling of the reconstruction error with added noise.

Noise and limitations on sensitivity

2009
There are two major sources of noise in space. One was discovered in 1965 when Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey were calibrating a microwave communication receiver. They were unable to identify a noise that was present at the same signal strength irrespective of the direction in which the antenna was pointed.

NOISE FIGURES, NOISE TEMPERATURES, AND SYSTEM SENSITIVITY

1961
Abstract : The definitions of terms used in systems noise work are presented, as well as general techniques of describing noise power resulting from both the source and the excess noise added by the network under consideration. A unique feature presented is a unified development of 7 noise temperatures encountered in this field, with tables showing the

Differential Sensitivity for Smell: "Noise" at the Nose

Science, 1977
The ability of subjects to resolve differences in concentration of chemicals in the vapor phase by smell rivaled the optimum performance of chromatographs. In some instances, subjects resolved a difference in concentration of only 5 percent. The reported inability of olfaction to register fine differences in intensity seems to be largely a result of ...
