Deformation Behavior of Optical Ceramic Nanomultilayers: The Role of Aperiodicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ceramic nanomultilayers demonstrate optical and mechanical behavior tunability through aperiodicity. Within the studied systems, optically optimized coatings exhibit an average ultraviolet, visible, and near‐infrared spectral transmittance above 90%.

Effect of Annealing Temperature on Microstructure and Dry‐Sliding Behavior of Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam Ti6Al2Sn4Zr6Mo Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Heat treatment parameters critically affect the wear resistance of powder bed fusion–laser beam (PBF‐LB)‐produced Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–6Mo alloy. This study found that optimizing annealing temperature allows to obtain a tailored microstructure, which enhances the dry‐sliding behavior by forming a stable and functional mechanically mixed layer (MML), ensuring

I Knew There Was Something Wrong with That Paper : Scientific Rhetorical Styles and Scientific Misunderstandings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This selection unpacks scientific prose and claim substantiation for Nobel Prize winner, Stan Prusiner, in the transmissible spongiform encephlopathies field (i.e., mad cow disease). Applying linguistic strategies such as M. A. K. Halliday\u27s favorite

Bare Nominals

open access: yes, 2017
Bare nominals (also called “bare nouns”) are nominal structures without an overt article or other determiner. The distinction between a bare noun and a noun that is part of a larger nominal structure must be made in context: Milk is a bare nominal in I bought milk, but not in I bought the milk.

Heterostructure‐Specific Toughening Mechanisms in Metallic Laminates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study highlights how various aspects of the heterostructural design of metallic laminates can be specifically tailored to achieve improved fracture resistance for damage‐tolerant designs of cyclically stressed components. Based on results from in situ fatigue crack growth tests, a comprehensive overview of the formation and development of ...

Structural licensing of sentential complements: evidence from Russian noun-complement constructions [PDF]

open access: yesBucharest Working Papers in Linguistics, 2014
In this paper I discuss restrictions on the realization of sentential complements of nouns on the basis of the distribution očto-clauses in Russian. I propose an account for these restrictions in which sentential complements of nouns are introduced by a ...

Causativity in zero and overt nominalizations: An experimental study [PDF]

open access: yesLinguistica Pragensia
We experimentally evaluate three patterns of deverbal nominalizations derived by means of zero, -ing and Romance suffixes (i.e., -(at)ion, -ment, and -ance) in English as to whether they can express causativity and anticausativity like their base verbs ...

Internal Temperature Evolution Metrology and Analytics in Li‐Ion Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the non‐linear evolution of internal temperatures across diverse operating conditions, highlighting the disparities between internal and external measurements and the resulting thermal asymmetries. The coupled thermo‐electrochemical modeling framework provides a comprehensive analysis of various heat generation modes, examining ...
