BACKGROUND Higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers are associated with an increased risk of perioperative atrial fibrillation and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS). Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug that might reduce the incidence

Prevention of perioperative stroke in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.
Lancet Neurology, 2023About 300 million adults undergo non-cardiac surgery annually. Although, in this setting, the incidence of perioperative stroke is low, the absolute number of patients experiencing a stroke is substantial.

Ultrasound use in non-cardiac surgery
Best Practice & Research Clinical Anaesthesiology, 2009Ultrasound is used in anaesthesia for diagnostic and interventional reasons. This article gives the anaesthesiolgoist an overview about the relevant indications for ultrasound in non-cardiac surgical patients. Other chapters will focus in more detail on different aspects of ultrasound use in non-cardiac anaesthesia.

Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Noncardiac Surgery
Heart, Lung and Circulation, 2018Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are used to facilitate circulatory support in standard cardiac surgery and emergency intervention, but CPB and ECMO are not used routinely in non-cardiac surgery involving the thorax and major vessels.

Prediction of cardiac risk in non-cardiac surgery
European Heart Journal, 1987This prospective study was carried out to develop a model for the prediction of cardiac risk in non-cardiac surgery. Detailed data were collected concerning the preoperative status of 2609 consecutive patients, who were followed closely during the postoperative course. Fatal or life-threatening cardiac complications occurred in 68 patients (2.6%).
