Non-contact infrared thermometers [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2014
I wrote a letter to the BMJ last year setting out the evidence for non-contact infrared thermometry in adults.1 Unlike paediatric use,2 my conclusion was that these devices are not reliable in adults, largely because vasoconstriction of the blood supply to their foreheads and perspiration leading to a dangerously high false negative rate.

Non-contact ultrasonic detection of angled surface defects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Non-destructive testing is an important technique, and improvements are constantly needed. Surface defects in metals are not necessarily confined to orientations normal to the sample surface; however, much of the previous work investigating the ...

New non-contact biometer

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, 2008
Abstract Purpose To evaluate and compare axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), and central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements assessed by optical biometry (OB), ultrasound biometry (UB), optical low coherence reflectometry pachymetry (OLCR‐P), and by a new prototype applying optical low coherence reflectometry biometry

Magnetic phase transitions in Gd64Sc36 studied using non-contact ultrasonics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The speed and attenuation of ultrasound propagation can be used to determine material properties and identify phase transitions. Standard ultrasonic contact techniques are not always convenient due to the necessity of using couplant; however, recently ...
