Metabolism of non-esterified fatty acids in diabetes

Abstract A long-term infusion of heparin in the course of post-alimentary lipaemia is replaced by a direct infusion of NEFA into the blood stream. An enhanced removal of NEFA from the circulation was observed in diabetic subjects, compared with non-diabetic subjects, though the concentration of NEFA on fasting was higher in diabetic patients.

Dairy cows experience an increased demand for glucose to support milk production. However, negative energy balance is a common condition in peripartum cows. In response, fat mobilization provides non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) for oxidation in the liver to generate ATP.

Plasma non-esterified fatty acids in sheep

Concentrations of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in sheep were found to be within the range 0.1–0.9 m-equiv/l. Relatively high levels (1.0–2.5 m-equiv/l) occurred in pregnant and non-pregnant sheep when fasted. Intravenous injection of glucose (1.0 g/kg body wt.) depressed KEFA concentrations to levels of about 0.05 m-equiv/l.
