Metabolism of non-esterified fatty acids in diabetes
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1961Abstract A long-term infusion of heparin in the course of post-alimentary lipaemia is replaced by a direct infusion of NEFA into the blood stream. An enhanced removal of NEFA from the circulation was observed in diabetic subjects, compared with non-diabetic subjects, though the concentration of NEFA on fasting was higher in diabetic patients.

In response, fat mobilization provides non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) for oxidation in the liver to generate ATP.

Plasma non-esterified fatty acids in sheep
Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1960Concentrations of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in sheep were found to be within the range 0.1–0.9 m-equiv/l. Relatively high levels (1.0–2.5 m-equiv/l) occurred in pregnant and non-pregnant sheep when fasted. Intravenous injection of glucose (1.0 g/kg body wt.) depressed KEFA concentrations to levels of about 0.05 m-equiv/l.

In particular, they can decrease important T-cell functions that may have a profound impact on the acquired immune response. Several mechanisms may explain the immunosuppressive properties of PUFAs.
