Metabolism of non-esterified fatty acids in diabetes

Clinica Chimica Acta, 1961
Abstract A long-term infusion of heparin in the course of post-alimentary lipaemia is replaced by a direct infusion of NEFA into the blood stream. An enhanced removal of NEFA from the circulation was observed in diabetic subjects, compared with non-diabetic subjects, though the concentration of NEFA on fasting was higher in diabetic patients.

Enhanced escape of non-esterified fatty acids from tissue uptake: its role in impaired insulin-induced lowering of total rate of appearance in obesity and Type II diabetes mellitus

open access: yesDiabetologia, 2000
Aims/hypothesis. To estimate non-esterified fatty acids kinetics in patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and obese subjects in the postabsorptive state and during hyperinsulinaemia using non-equlibrium tracer conditions.Methods.

Effects of non-esterified fatty acids on the gluconeogenesis in bovine hepatocytes

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2011
Dairy cows experience an increased demand for glucose to support milk production. However, negative energy balance is a common condition in peripartum cows. In response, fat mobilization provides non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) for oxidation in the liver to generate ATP.

Plasma non-esterified fatty acids in sheep

Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1960
Concentrations of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in sheep were found to be within the range 0.1–0.9 m-equiv/l. Relatively high levels (1.0–2.5 m-equiv/l) occurred in pregnant and non-pregnant sheep when fasted. Intravenous injection of glucose (1.0 g/kg body wt.) depressed KEFA concentrations to levels of about 0.05 m-equiv/l.

Modulation of T-cell signalling by non-esterified fatty acids

Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 2007
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been shown to be immunosuppressive. In particular, they can decrease important T-cell functions that may have a profound impact on the acquired immune response. Several mechanisms may explain the immunosuppressive properties of PUFAs.

Monoamines and the effect of ethanol on corticosterone and non-esterified fatty acids

Alcohol, 1985
The effect of locus coeruleus lesions, DSP-4 neurotoxin, intraventricular propranolol and dorsal or median raphe lesions on ethanol-induced elevations of corticosterone and NEFA were examined in rats. Locus coeruleus lesions, DSP-4 and propranolol attenuated ethanol-induced elevations of NEFA, but not corticosterone. Dorsal raphe lesions attenuated the

The contaminating effects of cephalins in estimating non-esterified fatty acids

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1967
Abstract 1. 1. A study has been made of the contaminating effects of phospholipids in the titrimetric procedure of DOLE1. 2. 2. Phosphatides were found to be extracted to varying degrees in the heptane phase of the method of Dole. None of the lysophosphatides was extracted. 3. 3.
