Robust Detectors for Signals in Non-Gaussian Noise

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1977
The robustness of suboptimal nonlinear detectors for known discrete-time signals in non-Gaussian noise is investigated. The measure of robustness used is the degradation of asymptotic relative efficiency (compared to a linear detector) from that achieved by an optimal nonlinear detector.

Non-Gaussian noise-optimized intracellular cytosolic calcium oscillations

Biosystems, 2011
We have numerically studied the effect of a particular kind of non-Gaussian colored noise (NGN), characterized by the deviation q from Gaussian noise (q=1), on intracellular cytosolic calcium (Ca(2+)) oscillations. It is found that, as q is increased, the Ca(2+) oscillation regularity increases and reaches a best performance at an optimal q, and then ...

Non-Gaussian ASE Noise in Raman Amplification Systems

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2009
A model accurately describing amplified spontaneous emission noise in systems with distributed Raman gain is presented. Numerical simulations are corroborated with experimental results. Our model is used to study the interaction between signal and noise mediated by fiber nonlinearities for different propagation regimes.

Detection of non-Gaussian signals in non-Gaussian noise using the bispectrum

IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1990
The problem of detecting a non-Gaussian time series in the presence of additive Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise is cast into a classical hypothesis testing framework, using the sample bispectrum as the test statistic. The power of the test is demonstrated as a function of signal-to-noise ratio, the degree of skewness of the signal, and processing ...

Noise subspace techniques in non-gaussian noise using cumulants

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 1995
We consider noise subspace methods for narrowband direction-of-arrival or harmonic retrieval in colored linear non-gaussian noise of unknown covariance and unknown distribution. The non-gaussian noise covariance is estimated via higher order cumulants and combined with correlation information to solve a generalized eigenvalue problem.

Wavelet thresholding for some classes of non–Gaussian noise

Statistica Neerlandica, 2002
Wavelet shrinkage and thresholding methods constitute a powerful way to carry out signal denoising, especially when the underlying signal has a sparse wavelet representation. They are computationally fast, and automatically adapt to the smoothness of the signal to be estimated.

Colored non-Gaussian noise induced resonant activation

Chemical Physics Letters, 2005
Abstract We have investigated the mean first passage time (MFPT) problem in the presence of a fluctuating barrier. The fluctuation is carried out through colored multiplicative noise. Both Gaussian and non-Gaussian colored noises are considered. Our study shows that the resonant activation (RA) can appear at slower rate of increase of external noise ...
