Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) refers to the delivery of mechanical ventilation to the lungs using techniques that do not require an endotracheal airway. Essentially, there are two modalities: continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and pressure support ventilation (NIPSV).

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is an effective technique that can avert side effects and complications associated with endotracheal intubation. NIV is primarily used to avert the need for endotracheal intubation in patients with early stage acute respiratory failure (ARF), and to prevent postextubation respiratory failure in patients considered to be ...

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has become a common treatment for acute and chronic respiratory failure. The main theoretical advantage of NIV is avoiding the side effects and complications related to endotracheal intubation, improving patient comfort and preserving airway defense mechanisms.

During the last 25 years, the use of non-invasive ventilation has grown substantially. Non-invasive ventilation refers to the delivery of positive pressure to the lungs without endotracheal intubation and plays a significant role in the treatment of patients with acute respiratory failure and in the domiciliary management of some chronic respiratory ...

Mechanical ventilation through an endotracheal tube (ETT) is an accepted, life-saving procedure for patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF), after the failure of conventional treatments (O2 + drugs). However, the positioning of an ETT is an invasive procedure, that can be associated with the development of important complications, stress and ...

The objective of this chapter is to analyze articles on the adaptation of the elderly to NIV. The methodology is integrative literature review, using the PICO methodology. After analyzing the content covered, the authors found that there are common factors regarding the adaptation of elderly users to NIV. COPD users are the main users of NIV.

Non-invasive ventilation and sleep
Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2002In this paper, we review the effects of nocturnal mechanical ventilation on sleep. Indeed, although non-invasive assisted ventilation during sleep has been applied extensively, the exact effects of this treatment on sleep quality have not been thoroughly studied.
