Effects of Non-Ionic Surfactants upon Animal Tissues

Nature, 1960
IN a previous communication1 it has been reported that non-ionic surfactants produce a marked effect upon living plants. Setala et al. 2 have investigated the tumour-promoting capacity of certain non-ionic surfactants (‘Span’ and ‘Tween’) on mice, and these workers have indicated the need for further investigation of the co-carcinogenic properties of ...

Acrylic Latices Stabilized by Polymerizable Non-ionic Surfactant

Polymer International, 1996
The final latex particle size is controlled by the concentration of polymerizable non-ionic surfactant NE-40 in the emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). The particle size decreases with increasing NE-40 concentration and increases with increasing persulphate initiator concentration.

Ecotoxicological characterization of polyoxyethylene glycerol ester non-ionic surfactants and their mixtures with anionic and non-ionic surfactants

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2017
This paper reports on a study that investigated the aquatic toxicity of new non-ionic surfactants derived from renewable raw materials, polyoxyethylene glycerol ester (PGE), and their binary mixtures with anionic and non-ionic surfactants. Toxicity of pure PGEs was determined using representative organisms from different trophic levels: luminescent ...

Non-ionic Surfactants as Drag Reducing Additives

Nature Physical Science, 1972
THE addition of small amounts of certain materials to fluids undergoing turbulent flow causes a reduction on pressure drop called drag reduction. Polymer solutions, soap solutions and solid suspensions in liquids and gases have all demonstrated this phenomenon1.

Modification of reversed-phase separations of small molecules using non-ionic surfactants and mixed ionic- non-ionic surfactants

Journal of Chromatography A, 1986
The effects of non-ionic surfactants, Tween 20 and Tween 60, on reversed-phase separations of small molecules have been examined. Tween compounds were found to partition irreversibly into the ODS material used, markedly decreasing capacity factors for the compounds tested. Compounds which could hydrogen bond were less affected. Ion pairing using either

Sorption of non-ionic surfactants onto soil

Water Research, 1992
Abstract Experiments in batch soil/aqueous systems were conducted to evaluate the sorption onto soil of three micelle-forming non-ionic surfactants and one lamellae-forming non-ionic surfactant. Non-ionic surfactant sorption onto soil was assessed using a surface tension technique for aqueous-phase surfactant concentrations less than surfactant ...

Screening of non-Ionic Surfactant for Enhancing Biobutanol Production

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2015
This work deals with finding a suitable non-ionic surfactant which has high butanol capturing capacity and can be separated at a temperature close to room temperature and does not extract any intermediates or substrate (i.e., glucose). Importantly, it should be biocompatible, and its separation from the aqueous phase is not affected by other ...

Non‐ionic surfactant biodegradation in lab‐scale activated sludge

Environmental Technology, 2009
The biodegradation of a non-ionic surfactant was evaluated by the evolution of the microbial activity and the determination of the soluble surfactant present in the effluent. Two lab-activated sludge reactors/systems were fed with synthetic sewage, one of which received in addition different concentrations--5 and 10 mg/L--of nonylphenol ethoxylates ...

Extractive spectrophotometric determination of non-ionic surfactants in water

Talanta, 1982
The solvent extraction of non-ionic surfactants with potassium chloride and tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester potassium salt has been studied, and a method developed for determining trace amounts of non-ionic surfactants in water spectrophotometrically.

Some properties of extruded non-ionic surfactant micro-tubes

International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2003
Polyhedral non-ionic surfactant vesicles (niosomes) undergo complex shape transitions as a result of mechanical stress. When extruded under pressure from capillaries with exit diameters smaller than the diameter of the vesicles, a series of novel structures comprising mostly of tubules, vesicles inside tubules and concentric structures can be formed ...
