Targeted and non-targeted effects of ionizing radiation

open access: yesJournal of Radiation Research and Applied Sciences, 2015
For a long time it was generally accepted that effects of ionizing radiation such as cell death, chromosomal aberrations, DNA damage, mutagenesis, and carcinogenesis result from direct ionization of cell structures, particularly DNA, or from indirect ...

Does foreign direct investment affect wage inequality? An empirical investigation [PDF]

open access: yes
We use a panel of more than 100 countries for the period 1980 to 2002 to analyse the relationship between inward foreign direct investment (FDI) and wage inequality.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Institutional monitoring and the non-linear effect on audit quality. UK evidence

open access: yesCogent Business & Management
Extant literature describes a monitoring role for institutional investors that aims to safeguard the value of their investments. Institutional investors with significant shareholdings are motivated to monitor management and require high-quality audits to

Non-linear buckling analysis of tapered curved composite plates

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2011
Linear formulations are insufficient to take into account the effect of large deflections that occur after initial buckling. This effect can only be considered in the non-linear buckling analysis.

Marginal effects for non-linear prediction functions

open access: yesData Mining and Knowledge Discovery
AbstractBeta coefficients for linear regression models represent the ideal form of an interpretable feature effect. However, for non-linear models such as generalized linear models, the estimated coefficients cannot be interpreted as a direct feature effect on the predicted outcome.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Nonlinear electrical properties of nanostructured porous silicon films

open access: yesPhysical Sciences and Technology, 2015
Porous silicon films have been prepared by electrochemical etching. Morphology of the films has beenstudied by scanning probe microscope characterized by presence of self-similar structures with different scales from hundreds of nanometers to microns ...
