Language and Speech, 2001
In a series of experiments using monosyllabic words produced by a native and a non-native speaker of English, native English speakers monitored the wordinitial consonants of the words to decide which of two consonants was present on each trial. In some of the experiments, a secondary task of a linguistic nature, deciding whether the target-bearing ...

Non‐native protein aggregation kinetics
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2007AbstractExperimental kinetics of non‐native protein aggregation are of practical importance in that they help dictate viable processing, formulation, and storage conditions for biotechnology products, and appear to play a role in determining the onset of a number of diseases. Fundamentally, aggregation kinetics provide insights into the identity of key

Intelligibility of non-native Lombard speech for non-native listeners
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2004Previous study [C-N. Li, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114, 2364 (2003)] has shown that foreign-accented Lombard speech is more intelligible than normal speech when presented in noise to native English listeners. This research extends that work and examines the intelligibility of non-native English speakers’ Lombard speech perceived by listeners from the same L1

Research suggests that the threat from invasive non-native species (INNS) is growing. Biological invasions by INNS harm native species and habitats and can have economic impacts. Biosecurity measures can be adopted to prevent the introduction and spread of INNS.

The ubiquitous process of globalization is reflected in and affects not only the human economy, but has also given rise to unprecedented environmental changes. The appearance of alien crustaceans is a phenomenon that is very hard to define unequivocally.

Other than the main contribution of this work, the HMMs as statistical pronunciation models we describe in Chap. 7, we have conducted several experiments to handle non-native speech. These include rule-based phoneme lattice processing and multilingual weighted codebooks of semi-continuous HMM based recognizers.
