Dynamic Observation of Lacy Pattern Formation in a Bone Tissue Model Using Liquid Phase Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we establish a low‐dose liquid‐phase electron microscopy workflow for real‐time observation of biological processes in hydrated conditions. Beam damage is reduced by imaging only 20% of the pixels and reconstructing the complete image using an inpainting algorithm.

Facilitation of native and non-native species by intermediate foundation species

open access: yes, 2013
Facilitation cascades stem from co-occurring habitat-forming species that add biogenic structure to otherwise barren ecosystems. Specifically, they are formed when the primary (basal) foundation species enables the establishment of intermediate ...

Non-native tree species

open access: yes
• Targeted cultivation of non-native tree species still plays a minor role in Swiss forestry. The area dominated by such species has increased by 0.2% to 0.7% over the past decade.• Under particular environmental conditions, non-native woody species may spread invasively, especially at lower altitudes.

Nanoamphizymes: Self‐Assembled Amphiphilic Enzymatic Nanomaterials for High‐Performance Biocatalysis and Biosensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An amphiphilic GOx nanoamphizyme was constructed by covalently introducing hydrophobic PPNI linkers onto GOx, enabling spontaneous self‐assembly into tunable nanoparticles. Mild crosslinking further stabilized the assemblies and enhanced catalytic performance and stability.

Ecological Interactions Between Native and Non-Native Lady Beetle Species.

open access: yes
Lady beetles (family Coccinellidae) are found worldwide, with 90% of the almost 6000 species acting as agriculturally beneficial predators. Lady beetles are an important biological pest control, commonly consuming aphids, and are also used as a ...

Exceptional Electro‐Optic Coefficient Unlocked via Polarization Swaying in KNbO3 Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present the largest reported electro‐optic response in any material to date, guided by a new design principle that exploits ultralow coercive field polarization swaying enabled by low‐symmetry ferroelectric phases in monoclinic KNbO3 thin films for energy‐efficient classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits. ABSTRACT The electro‐optic effect

How the Porous Transport Layer Dictates Membrane Electrode Assembly Performance of IrO2 Catalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The Schottky barrier formed at the catalyst | PTL interface critically governs both the initial performance and long‐term durability of the PEMWE, and its magnitude is dictated by the catalyst's work function. This limitation can be resolved by combining a rutile IrO2 core for efficient electron transfer with an amorphous IrOx shell for high surface ...

Single‐Cell Resolution Mapping of Osteoarthritis‐Associated Chondrocyte Dynamics Using a High‐Density CMOS MEA Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐cell and spatially resolved impedance mapping using a high‐density CMOS‐MEA platform enables non‐invasive monitoring of osteoarthritis‐associated chondrocyte dynamics. Continuous label‐free measurements reveal heterogeneous remodeling behaviors, including proliferation, migration, and phenotypic transitions, establishing a powerful approach for ...

Microfluidic Nano‐Assembly of Red‐Blood‐Cell (RBC) Lipids and Components for Engineering Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered red blood cell‐derived extracellular vesicles (eRBCEVs) are synthesized via controlled microfluidic assembly from native RBC lipids, enabling tunable encapsulation of proteins, nucleic acids, nanoparticles, and viral vectors. The platform demonstrates reproducible nanoscale architecture, preserved membrane composition, and functional cargo ...
