Comparative tolerances of non-indigenous bridled goby and native exquisite goby to salintiy, temperature and sediment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Australian bridled goby (Arenigobius bifrenatus) has been in New Zealand since 1996, and has subsequently spread to thirteen estuaries and the coastal Otara Lake.

Advancing SafeWax, A Bio‐Inspired Superhydrophobic Coating, Toward Sustainable and Climate‐Resilient Crop Protection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study advances SafeWax, a bio‐inspired, fatty‐acids‐based superhydrophobic coating, by identifying an agriculturally compliant solvent and revealing how solvent‐controlled Fatty acid crystallization governs the coating's microscopic structure and performance.

Composition, structural diversity, and regeneration patterns of tree species in the Kihamba agroforestry system

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Agroforestry systems in mountainous landscapes provide essential ecosystem services yet changes in overstory tree composition may threaten their structural integrity and long-term resilience.

Preferential Interfacial Engineering of Hydrogels via Interdigitated Nanoparticle Assembly

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Robust surface functionalization of hydrogel surfaces is performed via interdigitated metal nanoparticle assembly, inducing strong affinity with the hydrogel matrix. The partially exposed nanoparticle domains act as interfacial nanobridges that mediate both chemical and physical bonding with diverse materials, including small molecules, fluorous ...

Comparative Performance and Partial Load Cycling of Sodium‐Metal Chloride Battery Modules With Mixed‐Metal Fe,Zn and Ni,Fe Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Sustainable Na‐(Fe,Zn)Cl2 battery modules deliver discharge energies comparable to state‐of‐the‐art Na‐(Ni,Fe)Cl2 batteries through high active‐material utilization, although with lower power capability. Advanced electrochemical characterization reveals a distinct reaction mechanism and low resistance during Fe dechlorination.

Experiment on Prey-Switch of Hemigrapsus takanoi towards a native and non-native gammarid species

open access: yes
We conducted two experiments to assess the predation of female H. takanoi (a non-native species in the Baltic) on a native gammarid (Gammarus duebeni) and a non-native analogous gammarid (Gammarus tigrinus).

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...
