MagmaFlow: A desktop platform for artificial intelligence‐driven expression analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
MagmaFlow is a free, no‐code platform for gene expression analysis. It generates interactive volcano plots, links genes to literature, pathways, and diseases, prioritizes candidates using millions of publications, identifies affected biological processes, builds network diagrams, and exports publication‐ready figures and reports for macOS and Windows ...

Native and non-native plants attract diverse bees to urban gardens in California

open access: yesJournal of Pollination Ecology, 2019
Bees visit native and non-native plant species for pollen and nectar resources in urban, agricultural, and wildland environments. Results of an extensive survey of bee-flower collection records from 10 California cities from 2005-2011 were used to ...

Exploring the influence of lactoferrin on wound healing and related signaling pathways: a systematic review

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Lactoferrin promotes wound healing by activating MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and extracellular matrix pathways, enhancing fibroblast remodeling, proliferation, and re‐epithelialization. These mechanisms highlight its therapeutic potential in inflammation control, tissue repair, and remodeling.

Spatial distribution and introduction pathways of non-native freshwater fish species in China

open access: yesWater Biology and Security
Non-native freshwater fish species are regarded as a key factor responsible for the degradation of freshwater ecosystems. Although research on China's non-native freshwater fish species has been conducted at the national scale, the spatial distribution ...

Evolution‐guided yeast complementation reveals functional differences in human PSPH variants

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Ancient genomes can help guide which human genetic variants are tested experimentally. This study applies that idea to PSPH, a gene involved in serine biosynthesis, and uses high‐throughput yeast complementation to compare variant function. The findings reveal measurable differences among selected alleles and illustrate the value of evolution‐guided ...

Identifying and characterising a plant GH1 β‐glucosidase that exhibits hydrolytic activity on N‐linked glucopyranoside

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We report the first β‐glucosidase with demonstrated hydrolytic activity on an N‐linked glycopyranoside. The enzyme, native to maize, was biochemically characterised for this novel reaction, and structural modelling of the enzyme–substrate complex revealed several clues to the underlying reduced catalytic rate relative to its native O‐glycopyranoside ...

The behavioural ecology of the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, as an invasive species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This thesis focuses on the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, as an invasive species. Its non-native distribution, the biology behind its success and the reasons for its introduction are examined.

Grazing by non‐native ungulates negatively impacts vegetation important to a native species of concern

open access: yesEcosphere
Non‐native grazers compete with native species across the globe. We present a novel approach to study the composition of the herbaceous understory across three study areas within the Great‐Basin with different historic and contemporary grazing regimes ...

"A preliminary analysis of data on non-native tree species from a global database: the occurrence of two case species in urban and protected areas" [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
openThe introduction and spread of non-native tree species have become a prominent ecological concern in recent years. This study presents a preliminary analysis of data sourced from a comprehensive global database, focusing on the occurrence of two ...

Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.
