Impact of Composite Particle Morphology on the Performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrode: A Study by Finite Element Modelling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2016
Micro-models, which assume that the electrode mixture particles are regularly spherical according to the mathematical model, have been extensively studied by computer simulation. Actually, the component particles are irregularly even distorted.

Efficient Sparse Clustering of High-Dimensional Non-spherical Gaussian Mixtures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We consider the problem of clustering data points in high dimensions, i.e. when the number of data points may be much smaller than the number of dimensions.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Statistics of Smoke Sphericity and Optical Properties Using Spaceborne Lidar Measurements

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Smoke particles from biomass burning events are typically assumed to be spherical despite previous observations of non-spherical smoke. As such, large uncertainties exist in some physical and optical parameters used in lidar aerosol retrievals, including

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Experimental and DEM based characterization of flowability of non-spherical and spherical bauxite particles

open access: yesScientific Reports
The flowability of granular bauxite materials critically affects the efficiency of industrial systems such as moving bed heat exchangers (MBHEs) in concentrated solar power (CSP) applications.

Double explosions and jet formation in GRB-supernova progenitors

open access: yes, 2010
Progenitors of long GRBs, and core-collapse supernovae in general, may have two separate mechanisms driving the outflows: quasi-isotropic neutrino-driven supernova explosions followed by a highly collimated relativistic outflow driven by the GRB central ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Experimental and numerical study of non-spherical particles in moving bed heat exchangers

open access: yesChemical Engineering Journal Advances
Moving Bed Heat Exchangers (MBHE) are vital for high-temperature thermal management in applications like concentrated solar power and waste heat recovery.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
