Source of terrestrial non-thermal radiation
Nature, 1976Observations from satellites have revealed the existence of continuum radiation from just beyond the plasmapause. I propose here that this is generated by Cerenkov radiation coupling to the O mode of radiation, which can propagate in low density plasmas. The observations are interpreted on the basis of this theory.

This assertion is justified by the success in reproducing the observations by ray tracing calculations in appropriate coronal models.
