The performance of a Wells turbine with various non-uniform tip clearances was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The investigation was performed on numerical models of a NACA0020 blade profile under steady flow conditions. The performance of turbines with uniform and non-uniform tip clearances was compared.

Pre-stall disturbances and rotating instability (RI) are two typical phenomena observed in axial compressors prior to stall. In this study, experimental measurements and numerical simulations were employed to investigate the relationship between pre-stall disturbances and RI and their physical mechanisms in an axial compressor rotor with a non-uniform ...

Non-Uniform Flows in Axial Compressors Due to Tip Clearance Variation
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Mechanical Engineering Science, 1983An approximate analysis is presented for the asymmetric velocity non-uniformities that can exist in an axial compressor due to variations in tip clearance around the circumference. Calculations have been carried out for several different compressor configurations, as well as for both rotating (fixed to rotor) and stationary clearance variations.

Tip injection has shown potential for controlling turbine tip clearance flows; however, the effects of tip injection may behave differently at design and off-design incidences. This paper computationally investigates the sensitivity of endwall flowfields and aerodynamics to flow incidence for flat and cavity tips at different injection locations, in ...

The performance, efficiency, and stall inception of an axial compressor was investigated experimentally with small levels of rotor centerline offset. The measurements were acquired using a high-speed, single-stage compressor. The rotor was levitated magnetically during operation which allowed precise positioning of the rotor centerline within the ...

This paper presents a numerical investigation of effects of axial non-uniform tip clearances on the aerodynamic performance of a transonic axial compressor rotor (NASA Rotor 37). The three-dimensional steady flow field within the rotor passage was simulated with the datum tip clearance of 0.356 mm at the design wheel speed of 17188.7 rpm.

A Study on the Effects of Blade Profile and Non-Uniform Tip Clearance of the Wells Turbine
Volume 6: Nick Newman Symposium on Marine Hydrodynamics; Yoshida and Maeda Special Symposium on Ocean Space Utilization; Special Symposium on Offshore Renewable Energy, 2008Several of wave energy devices being studied under many wave energy programs in the United Kingdom, Japan, Portugal, India and other countries make use of the principle of an oscillating water column (OWC). In such wave energy devices, a water column which oscillates due to wave motion is used to drive an oscillating air column which is converted into ...

Nonuniform Flow in a Compressor Due to Asymmetric Tip Clearance
Journal of Turbomachinery, 2000This paper presents an analytical study of flow redistribution in a compressor stage due to asymmetric tip clearance distribution. The entire stage is modeled as an actuator disk and it is assumed that upstream and downstream flow fields are determined by the local tip clearance. The flow is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible.

The suppression of the pressure fluctuations in the tip clearance of the pump-jet propulsor is of great significance in improving its noise radiation level. This study considers adding rotor blade crown structure to propose a new type of pump-jet propulsor.
