Symptom Domain Groups of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Tools Independently Predict Hospitalizations and Re-hospitalizations in Cirrhosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) tools can identify health-related quality of life (HRQOL) domains that could differentially affect disease progression.

Post‐Banding Ulcer Bleeding After Endoscopic Ligation: Incidence, Risk Factors and Outcomes in Patients With Cirrhosis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
A PBUB is a rare but often fatal complication of endoscopic variceal band ligation. The relevant risk factors contributing to PBUB are unknown and consequently there are no effective preemptive strategies. This study highlights kidney disease as a predictor of PBUB together with the well‐established higher risk for urgent band ligation.

Management of Non Variceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleed

open access: yesJournal of Gastrointestinal & Digestive System, 2011
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding has 10% in-hospital mortality. Despite significant advances in the management, there has not been any improvement in mortality. The only improvement over the last 25 years has been in variceal bleeds. Increasing age and comorbidities are the major factors related to mortality.

Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis Is Associated With High Mortality, Which Interacts With Antibiotic Prophylaxis in a National Cirrhosis Cohort

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
In a national cohort of newly decompensated Veterans with cirrhosis, SBP and recurrences are linked with higher death and need for liver transplant. SBP prophylaxis, whether primary or secondary, worsens resistance and interacts with mortality but not liver transplant.

Amino Acid Imbalance Is an Independent Factor for Mortality in Patients With Liver Cirrhosis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Amino acid imbalance, reflected by a low branched‐chain amino acids (BCAA)‐to‐tyrosine ratio (BTR), independently predicts mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Both decreased serum BCAA and increased tyrosine levels are significant and independent prognostic markers.

Clinical outcomes of over-the-scope-clip system for the treatment of acute upper non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology, 2019
Background Conventional endoscopic treatments can’t control bleeding in as many as 20% of patients with non-variceal gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Recent studies have shown that over-the-scope-clip (OTSC) system allowed for effective hemostasis for ...

Statin Therapy Independently Reduces Mortality and Liver Complications in Patients With Cirrhosis: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Statin therapy in cirrhosis may confer a survival benefit while reducing the risk of hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma. ABSTRACT Background The role of statins in cirrhosis remains controversial. Historically restricted due to safety concerns, emerging evidence highlights potential pleiotropic benefits, though effects on mortality and
