A Nonlinear Acoustic Resonator

Volume 1: 21st Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, Parts A, B, and C, 2007
An acoustic resonator of Helmholtz type with a membrane attached to one of its ends is studied in this work. A membrane possesses a geometric nonlinearity of cubic type. This work examines that when attached to the resonator, a membrane can be exploited to attenuate vibrations for a variable frequency range in an acoustical system.

Nonlinear acoustics in diagnostic ultrasound

Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2002
The propagation of ultrasonic waves is nonlinear. Phenomena associated with the propagation of diagnostic ultrasound pulses cannot be predicted using linear assumptions alone. These include a progressive distortion in waveform, the generation of frequency harmonics and acoustic shocks, excess deposition of energy and acoustic saturation.

Characterizing nonlinear interaction between a premixed swirling flame and acoustics: Heat-driven acoustic mode switching and triggering

Energy, 2018
The aim of this present study is to examine the critical role of air-fuel equivalence ratio ะค and air flow rate on triggering self-excited thermoacoustic oscillations in a swirling combustor, which is widely applied in industry to achieve low combustion ...

Experimental Investigations Into Nonlinear Vibro-Acoustics for Detection of Delaminations in a Composite Laminate

Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems, 2018
In recent years, nonlinear vibro-acoustic methods have shown potential to identify defects which are difficult to detect using linear ultrasonic methods.

Nonlinear demonstrations in acoustics

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2014
The world is nonlinear, and in presenting demonstrations in acoustics, one often has to consider the effects of nonlinearity. In this presentation the nonlinear effects are made to be very pronounced. The nonlinear effects of standing waves on a lightly stretched string (which is also very elastic) lead to wave shape distortion, mode jumping and ...

Nonlinear Acoustics in Fluids

2007
At high sound intensities or long propagation distances at sufficiently low damping acoustic phenomena become nonlinear. This chapter focuses on nonlinear acoustic wave properties in gases and liquids. The origin of nonlinearity, equations of state, simple nonlinear waves, nonlinear acoustic wave equations, shock-wave formation, and interaction of ...

Nonlinear Geometrical Acoustics

1975
Abstract : The development of the theory of nonlinear wave propagation in both bounded and semi-infinite dissipative media is followed from its origins in the theories of linear geometrical acoustics, simple waves, and acceleration fronts. In Part I, Sections 2 to 5, we consider examples in which only one component wave is excited and describe the ...
