Energetics of Nonlinear Geostrophic Adjustment
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1995Abstract Solutions and energetics for nonlinear geostrophic adjustment with an initial height perturbation of the order of the total fluid depth are computed and compared to solutions derived assuming linear dynamics. Both axisymmetric and zonally uniform profiles in 1½- and 2-layer shallow-water models are considered. Nonlinearities are present due to

Nonlinear Hydrostatic Adjustment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1996Abstract The final equilibrium state of Lamb's hydrostatic adjustment problem is found for finite amplitude heating. Lamb's problem consists of the response of a compressible atmosphere to an instantaneous, horizontally homogeneous heating. Results are presented for both isothermal and nonisothermal atmospheres.

Nonlinear effects in the torsional adjustment of interacting DNA
Physical Review E, 2004DNA molecules in solution, having negatively charged phosphates and countercations readsorbed on its surface, possess a distinct charge separation motif to interact electrostatically. If their double-helical structure were ideal, duplexes in parallel juxtaposition could choose azimuthal alignment providing attraction, or at least a reduction of ...

Risk adjusted identification of a class of nonlinear systems
2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2007This paper addresses the problem of identification of a class of nonlinear systems from a set-membership standpoint. Specifically we consider structures consisting of the interconnection of a linear time invariant plant and a sector bound static nonlinearity.

On Nonlinear Geostrophic Adjustment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1967Abstract Nonlinear features of the geostrophic adjustment process in a one-dimensional barotropic atmosphere are investigated by means of a perturbation expansion in the Froude number. The initial unbalanced velocity field is a continuous (nonconstant) even function of the spatial coordinate.

On Nonlinear Baroclinic Waves and Adjustment of Pancake Dynamics
Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics, 1998The authors study nonlinear baroclinic waves under the influence of stratification and rotation. They proceed from the three-dimensional nonhydrostatic Euler-Boussinesq equations, expanding them in Craya-Herring cyclic basis and restricting to dominant waves and their nonlinear interaction. The regimes of balanced stratification and rotation as well as

Spinal Implant With Adjustable and Nonlinear Stiffness
Volume 6: 35th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, Parts A and B, 2011The human spine is a complex mechanism composed of both passive and active components. The nonlinear stiffness of the passive components provides mechanical stability to the system. There is a need for spinal implants that have nonlinear stiffness to provide this stabilization if the spine loses stiffness through injury, degeneration, or surgery. There

Nonlinear adjustment of a front over escarpment
Physics of Fluids, 2008We present the results of fully nonlinear numerical simulations of the geostrophic adjustment of a pressure front over topography, represented by an escarpment with a linear slope. The results of earlier simulations in the linear regime are confirmed and new essentially nonlinear effects are found. Topography influences both fast and slow components of
