Nonlinear Baroclinic Adjustment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1991Abstract The concept of baroclinic adjustment is reexamined in the context of a fully nonlinear two-layer model on a β-plane. Based on our results we propose a single, conceptually very simple mechanism of the nonlinear equilibration of waves and the mean flow, which we term “nonlinear baroclinic adjustment.” The new concept appears applicable to cases

Adjustment of Prediction Intervals in Nonlinear Regression
Biometrical Journal, 1997AbstractBy treating the nonlinear model as if it were linear in the parameterization θ in the neighbourhood of the least squares estimate θC, two‐sided nominally‐q‐prediction intervals can be constructed by applying the usual linear model theory.

Energetics of Nonlinear Geostrophic Adjustment
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1995Abstract Solutions and energetics for nonlinear geostrophic adjustment with an initial height perturbation of the order of the total fluid depth are computed and compared to solutions derived assuming linear dynamics. Both axisymmetric and zonally uniform profiles in 1½- and 2-layer shallow-water models are considered. Nonlinearities are present due to

CNN based self-adjusting nonlinear filters
1996 Fourth IEEE International Workshop on Cellular Neural Networks and their Applications Proceedings (CNNA-96), 2002In this paper, we discuss CNN based adaptive nonlinear filters derived from robust statistic and geometry-driven diffusion paradigms. The base models of both approaches are defined as difference controlled nonlinear (DCN) CNN templates while the self-adjusting property is ensured by simple analogic (analog and logic) CNN algorithms.

Nonlinear Hydrostatic Adjustment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1996Abstract The final equilibrium state of Lamb's hydrostatic adjustment problem is found for finite amplitude heating. Lamb's problem consists of the response of a compressible atmosphere to an instantaneous, horizontally homogeneous heating. Results are presented for both isothermal and nonisothermal atmospheres.

On Nonlinear Geostrophic Adjustment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1967Abstract Nonlinear features of the geostrophic adjustment process in a one-dimensional barotropic atmosphere are investigated by means of a perturbation expansion in the Froude number. The initial unbalanced velocity field is a continuous (nonconstant) even function of the spatial coordinate.

Nonlinear Phase Adjustment of Selective Excitation Pulses
Journal of Magnetic Resonance, 2000A continuous transformation of an RF waveform with a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation or generalization can be used to adjust the phase behavior of a selective excitation pulse while preserving the magnitude behavior of the spin response. This transformation has applications in removing or adding to the nonlinear phase properties of a selected ...

Nonlinear adjustment of a front over escarpment
Physics of Fluids, 2008We present the results of fully nonlinear numerical simulations of the geostrophic adjustment of a pressure front over topography, represented by an escarpment with a linear slope. The results of earlier simulations in the linear regime are confirmed and new essentially nonlinear effects are found. Topography influences both fast and slow components of
