Spinal Implant With Adjustable and Nonlinear Stiffness

Volume 6: 35th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, Parts A and B, 2011
The human spine is a complex mechanism composed of both passive and active components. The nonlinear stiffness of the passive components provides mechanical stability to the system. There is a need for spinal implants that have nonlinear stiffness to provide this stabilization if the spine loses stiffness through injury, degeneration, or surgery. There

Nonlinear control and state space adjustments

UKACC International Conference on Control (CONTROL '98), 1998
In the literature some techniques traditionally used in the study of the existence of solutions of nonlinear differential equations have been extended to solve problems of control, state estimation and parameter identification of nonlinear systems.

Numerical Simulation of Nonlinear Jet Streak Adjustment

Monthly Weather Review, 1982
Abstract The geostrophic adjustment process in a propagating jet maximum is studied through numerical experiments performed with a two-layer, nonlinear primitive equation model. Gravity-inertia modes generated by the jet streak from an initial three-dimensional balanced flow are isolated with the aid of diagnostic quasi-geostrophic and balance models ...

Nonlinear Parametric Least-Squares Adjustment.

1987
Abstract : A parametric adjustment model expresses n observables in terms of u parameters, where the structure linking the two groups is in general nonlinear. This model can be expanded in the Taylor series based on an initial point P. The standards procedure includes only the linear terms, constituting a known linearized model at P which is resolved ...

Adjustable optical nonlinearities in Cd1−xZnxTe alloys

Journal of Luminescence, 1997
Abstract This paper reports observed induced absorption in bulk Cd 1− x Zn x Te compounds in pump and probe experiments. The results are compared to the numerical simulation of a three-level system. The high nonlinearities, attributed to impurity levels in Cd 1− x Zn x Te, are tunable over a wide spectral region.

Improved Z-scan adjustment to thermal nonlinearities by including nonlinear absorption

Optics Communications, 2017
Abstract We propose a modified mathematical model of thermal optical nonlinearities which allow us to obtain the nonlinear refraction index and the nonlinear absorption coefficient with only one measurement. This modification is motivated by the influence that nonlinear absorption has on the measurement of the nonlinear refraction index at far field,

LEVERAGE ADJUSTMENTS FOR DISPERSION MODELLING IN GENERALIZED NONLINEAR MODELS

Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 2009
SummaryFor normal linear models, it is generally accepted that residual maximum likelihood estimation is appropriate when covariance components require estimation. This paper considers generalized linear models in which both the mean and the dispersion are allowed to depend on unknown parameters and on covariates.

Nonlinear effects in the torsional adjustment of interacting DNA

Physical Review E, 2004
DNA molecules in solution, having negatively charged phosphates and countercations readsorbed on its surface, possess a distinct charge separation motif to interact electrostatically. If their double-helical structure were ideal, duplexes in parallel juxtaposition could choose azimuthal alignment providing attraction, or at least a reduction of ...

Nonlinear adjustment of Asian real exchange rates

Economic Change and Restructuring, 2011
We utilize nonlinear models to examine the stationarity of Asian real exchange rates over the period from 1980:10 to 2007:09, using the US, Japan, and China as base countries. We find evidence of nonlinearity in most cases. Contrary to widely-held belief that the behavior of the real exchange rate should exhibit symmetrical adjustment for deviations ...

Two Approaches to Nonlinear Least Squares Adjustments

The Canadian Surveyor, 1974
The following discussion of Newton-Raphson and Newton-Gauss applied to least squares adjustment of nonlinear conditions with parameters is abstracted from the longer paper, “Modern Trends in Adjustment Calculus”, presented at the International Symposium on Problems Related to the Redefinition of North American Geodetic Networks, Fredericton, New ...
