MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

Critical Buckling Loads of the Perfect Hollomon's Power-law Columns [PDF]
In this work, we present analytic formulas for calculating the critical buckling states of some plastic axial columns of constant cross-sections. The associated critical buckling loads are calculated by Euler-type analytic formulas and the associated ...

Tailored thermo‐mechanical properties of shape memory polymer composites enable large reversible deformation as well as high actuation speed. Moreover, a structural design with curvature in the transverse direction achieves sub‐second actuation on heating and a larger recovery ratio on cooling. Finally, these newly developed smart two‐way actuators can

Overall buckling of lightweight stiffened panels using an adapted orthotropic plate method
The ultimate longitudinal bending strength of thin plated steel structures such as box girder bridges and ship hulls can be determined using an incremental–iterative procedure known as the Smith progressive collapse method.

Compression‐Tension‐Asymmetry and Stiffness Nonlinearity of Collagen‐Matrigel Composite Hydrogels
Self‐assembled collagen hydrogel matrices are widely used in tissue engineering applications. These matrices stiffen and contract laterally under tension due to fiber alignment and soften and collapse under compression due to fiber buckling. It is demonstrated that filler materials, such as Matrigel, linearize the mechanical behavior of collagen ...

Remorphable Architectures: Reprogramming Global Bistability through Locally Bistable Metamaterials
Local bistable reconfiguration in mechanical metamaterials is leveraged in globally bistable architectures to enable in situ reprogrammable transition pathways through state flip of individual building blocks. The local‐to‐global correspondence of instabilities empowers soft robotic systems with on‐demand morphing traits, as well as aerospace ...

Physical Intelligence in Small‐Scale Robots and Machines
“Physical intelligence” (PI) empowers biological organisms and artificial machines, especially at the small scales, to perceive, adapt, and even reshape their complex, dynamic, and unstructured operation environments. This review summarizes recent milestones and future directions of PI in small‐scale robots and machines.
