Dynamic Contracting: Accidents Lead to Nonlinear Contracts

SIAM Journal on Financial Mathematics, 2015
Summary: We consider a dynamic multitask principal-agent model in which the agent allocates his resources on two tasks of different types: effort and accident prevention. We explicitly characterize the optimal contract as well as optimal effort and prevention actions applied by the agent.

Adaptive Nonlinear Control With Contraction Metrics

IEEE Control Systems Letters, 2021
This letter derives direct adaptive control algorithms for nonlinear systems nominally contracting in closed-loop, but subject to structured parametric uncertainty. The approach is more general than methods based on feedback linearization or backstepping as it does not require invertibility or the system be in strict-feedback form. More broadly, it can

Nonlinear Contractions on Semimetric Spaces

JAA, 1995
Abstract Let (X, d) be a Hausdorff semimetric (d need not satisfy the triangle inequality) and d–Cauchy complete space. Let ƒ be a selfmap on X, for which d(ƒx, ƒy) ≤ φ(d(x, y)), (x, y ∈ X), where φ is a non– decreasing function from R +, the nonnegative reals, into R + such that φn ...

Optimal Nonlinear Pricing and Contingent Contracts

International Economic Review, 1992
Summary: Nonlinear pricing is extended to allow for demand, cost and capacity uncertainty. Incentive schedules are developed that implement the Pareto optimal allocation. Consumers choose a reference point, e.g., baseload demand. This determines both their payment level and the state-contingent output allocation.

Contraction analysis of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems

52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2013
Nonlinear 2nd-order Hamiltonian dynamics can be decomposed into a hierarchy of two 1st-order complex component dynamics, allowing their exponential stability to be assessed using basic tools in contraction theory. Exponential convergence rates can be explicitly computed based on the system's damping and the Hessian of its complex action.

Nonlinear contraction theorems in probabilistic spaces

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2008
The main result of the paper is a nonlinear contraction case of the common fixed point theorem of [\textit{G. Jungck}, Am. Math. Mon. 83, 261--263 (1976; Zbl 0321.54025)].

Partnership’s Profit Sharing: Linear and Nonlinear Contracts

International Game Theory Review, 2019
Suppose that one party proposes to another a contract for sharing an uncertain profit which maximizes the former’s expected utility, with respect to its beliefs, subject to a constraint on the latter’s expected utility, with respect to the latter’s beliefs. It turns out that the optimal contract, which we find, can be nonmonotone, as well as nonlinear,

TESTING FOR NONLINEARITY OF THE CONTRACTION SEGMENTS IN UTERINE ELECTROMYOGRAPHY

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2000
In this report, we test for possible nonlinearity of the contraction segments interspersed in a uterine electromyography (EMG), recorded externally with abdominal electrodes. There have been several reports in which the uterine contractility had been assumed to be an auto-regressive process and others have hypothesized it as a nonlinear process and ...

Stability in contractive nonlinear neural networks

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1990
We consider models of the form mu chi = -x + p + WF(x) where x = x(t) is a vector whose entries represent the electrical activities in the units of a neural network. W is a matrix of synaptic weights, F is a nonlinear function, and p is a vector (constant or slowly varying over time) of inputs to the units.

Common Fixed Points of Nonlinear Contractions

Acta Mathematica Hungarica, 1998
