Apparent nonlinear damping triggered by quantum fluctuations [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Nonlinear damping, the change in damping rate with the amplitude of oscillations plays an important role in many electrical, mechanical and even biological oscillators. In novel technologies such as carbon nanotubes, graphene membranes or superconducting

Impacts of Small-Scale Effect and Nonlinear Damping on the Nonlinear Vibrations of Electrostatic Microresonators [PDF]

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
Although the small-scale effect and nonlinear damping on the nonlinear vibration of microbeam electrostatic resonators are important, they have been overlooked by researchers.

Asymptotic evolution of nonlinear Landau damping

open access: greenPhysical Review E, 2000
The long-time evolution of nonlinear Landau damping in collisionless plasmas is analyzed by solving the Vlasov-Poisson system numerically. The value of the parameter marking the transition between Landau's and O'Neil's regimes is determined and compared with analytical results.

Damping Nonlinearities and Transient Inputs

open access: bronzeThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1969
Damping is generally considered to be linear in the mathematical analysis of lumped parameter systems by their associated modal equations of motion. Considering all sources of damping, the damping force should be represented by both linear and nonlinear functions of the modal displacement and velocity and/or a hysteresis curve.

Nonlinear Damping of the 'Linear' Pendulum

open access: green, 2003
This study shows that typical pendulum dynamics is far from the simple equation of motion presented in textbooks. A reasonably complete damping model must use nonlinear terms in addition to the common linear viscous expression. In some cases a nonlinear substitute for assumed linear damping may be more appropriate.

Investigation of the effects of value and modeling approach of natural damping on nonlinear responses of low rise moment-resisting steel frames [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Structural and Construction Engineering, 2021
Nonlinear time history analysis is recognized as the most appropriate tool for assessing the real behaviour of structures during seismic excitations. Validity rate of obtained results from this analysis significantly depends to the modeling, details and ...

The nonlinear vibrations of a vertical hard gyroscopic rotor with nonlinear characteristics [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Sciences, 2019
The paper considers an impact of viscous linear and cubic nonlinear damping of the elastic support on nonlinear vibrations of a vertical hard gyroscopic unbalanced rotor, taking into account nonlinear stiffness of the support material.
