Optimization of the seismic response of bridges using variable‐width joints
Abstract An aspect of seismic design of bridges that has hardly received proper attention so far is the appropriate selection of joint gaps. End gaps define the boundary conditions of the bridge and affect its dynamic response; their proper design can lead to an improved structural performance under dynamic actions. The idea of the ‘Dynamic Intelligent

Nonlinear damping in nanomechanical beam oscillator [PDF]
We investigate the impact of nonlinear damping on the dynamics of a nanomechanical doubly clamped beam. The beam is driven into nonlinear regime and the response is measured by a displacement detector. For data analysis we introduce a nonlinear damping term to Duffing equation.

A method is proposed for actively generating Friedrich–Wintgen bound state in the continuum (FW BIC) in a hybrid plasmonic–photonic structure near the commercially important communication wavelength. In addition, interactions between dark and bright modes can further form the FW BIC and support electromagnetically induced transparency‐like with maximum

An energy‐frequency parameter for earthquake ground motion intensity measure
Abstract A novel scalar ground motion intensity measure (IM), termed the energy‐frequency parameter, is proposed based on the Hilbert‐Huang transform. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed IM, the correlation analysis between the engineering demand parameter (EDP) and energy‐frequency parameter is performed using 1992 recorded ground motions ...

The asymptotic behavior (as well as the global existence) of classical solutions to the 3D compressible Euler equations are considered. For polytropic perfect gas (P(ρ)=P0ργ), time asymptotically, it has been proved by Pan and Zhao (2009) that linear ...

Factorization of damped wave equations with cubic nonlinearities [PDF]
The recent factorization scheme that we introduced for nonlinear polynomial ODEs in math-ph/0401040 is applied to the interesting case of damped wave equations with cubic nonlinearities. Traveling kink solutions are possible in the plane defined by the kink velocity versus the damping coefficient only along hyperbolas that are plotted ...

Curvature and dielectric is introduced to tune properties of surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) in complementary nanostructures: nanowire (NW) and nanohole (NH). It is found that NH complements the frequency band range of SPhP of NW. Frequency‐band subinterval of the SPhP in NHs and NWs can be tuned by dielectric.

Abstract The seismic performance of integral abutment bridges (IABs) is affected by the interaction with the surrounding soil, and specifically by the development of interaction forces in the embankment‐abutment and soil‐piles systems. In principle, these effects could be evaluated by means of highly demanding numerical computations that, however, can ...

A Study on Vibration Characteristics and Stability of the Ambulance Nonlinear Damping System
Considering the impact of the nonlinear stiffness, a 2-DOF vibration model with cubic terms was established according to the structural feature and nonlinear behavior. Ignoring the impact of nonlinear terms, the system was linearly analyzed.
