Compact waves in microscopic nonlinear diffusion [PDF]
We analyze the spread of a localized peak of energy into vacuum for nonlinear diffusive processes. In contrast with standard diffusion, the nonlinearity results in a compact wave with a sharp front separating the perturbed region from vacuum. In $d$ spatial dimensions, the front advances as $t^{1/(2+da)}$ according to hydrodynamics, with $a$ the ...

Learning by active nonlinear diffusion
This article proposes an active learning method for high dimensional data, based on intrinsic data geometries learned through diffusion processes on graphs. Diffusion distances are used to parametrize low-dimensional structures on the dataset, which allow for high-accuracy labelings of the dataset with only a small number of carefully chosen labels ...

Nonlinear Filtering for Jump Diffusion Observations [PDF]
We deal with the filtering problem of a general jump diffusion process,X, when the observation process,Y, is a correlated jump diffusion process having common jump times withX. In this setting, at any timetthe σ-algebraprovides all the available information aboutXt, and the central goal is to characterize the filter, πt, which is the conditional ...

In this paper the feasibility of multigrid techniques in the solution of nonlinear heat equations is investigated. The solution of the heat equation with hysteretic diffusivity requires improvements to the presently applied numerical procedures. Not only the diffusivity hysteresis must be modelled but the nonlinear heat equation requires development of
