Linear and nonlinear Dirac equation

Using the usual matrix representation of Clifford algebra of spacetime, quantities independent of the choice of a representation in the Dirac theory are examined, relativistic invariance of the theory is discussed, and a nonlinear equation is proposed.

We first review a method to generate nonlinear Dirac equations. The method demands the nonlinear extensions preserve several physical properties like locality, Hermiticity, Poincaré invariance and separability. The last constraint results in nonlinear extensions of non-polynomial type.

On semiclassical states of a nonlinear Dirac equation

We study the semiclassical limit of the least energy solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equation for x ∈ ℝ3. We prove that the equation has least energy solutions for all ħ > 0 small, and, in addition, that the solutions converge in a certain sense to the least energy solution of the associated limit problem as ħ → 0.

Soliton solutions of nonlinear Dirac equations

Dirac equations with fourth order self-couplings are investigated in one time and three space dimensions. Both stringlike and ball-like soliton solutions carrying nontopological quantum numbers are shown to exist, depending on the symmetries taken into account.
