Nonlinear Wave Equations for Oceanic Internal Solitary Waves
Studies in Applied Mathematics, 2015In the coastal ocean, the interaction of barotropic tidal currents with topographic features such as the continental shelf, sills in narrow straits, and bottom ridges are often observed to generate large amplitude, horizontally propagating internal solitary waves.

Long Weakly Nonlinear Internal Waves
2001In this chapter we study trivial nonlinear effects appearing while long internal waves propagate. There may be two situations and each of them needs its own analysis. The first is the propagation of internal waves in shallow water (e.g., in a shallow sea like the Baltic Sea) when the wavelength λ considerably exceeds the sea’s depth H.

Nonlinear internal waves over variable topography
Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1994Abstract A nonlinear two-layered fluid system on a variable bottom with freely moving upper surface and abrupt density change at the interface is considered. The two stably stratified layers with constant densities are assumed to be immiscible. Starting from the continuity and the mometum equations of an incompressible inviscid fluid for each layer and

For centuries sea-going explorers and navigators have been aware of the dangers associated with large-amplitude surface gravity waves. Particularly frightening are the giant waves commonly found around the southern tips of South Africa and South America.

Nonlinear internal waves in a one-dimensional channel
Il Nuovo Cimento C, 1987By applying a perturbation technique to the Euler equation for a two-layer fluid we show that the evolution of the interface is described by a Korteweg-de Vries equation. This model is applied to describe the tide generation of internal waves in the Straits of Gibraltar.

On Stabilizing the Strongly Nonlinear Internal Wave Model
Studies in Applied Mathematics, 2007A strongly nonlinear asymptotic model describing the evolution of large amplitude internal waves in a two‐layer system is studied numerically. While the steady model has been demonstrated to capture correctly the characteristics of large amplitude internal solitary waves, a local stability analysis shows that the time‐dependent inviscid model suffers ...

Model of Lidar Images of Nonlinear Internal Waves
Известия Российской академии наук. Физика атмосферы и океана, 2014An analytical model of a lidar image of a nonlinear internal wave (IW) described by the Kortewegde Vries equation (KdV) is developed. Peculiarities of lidar images of the nonlinear IW are processed and analyzed using real profiles of hydrooptical and hydrological characteristics in the Barents Sea.

Nonlinear internal waves in ideal rotating basins
Geophysical & Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics, 1994Abstract Starting from Euler's equations of motion a nonlinear model for internal waves in fluids is developed by an appropriate scaling and a vertical integration over two layers of different but constant density. The model allows the barotropic and the first baroclinic mode to be calculated. In addition to the nonlinear advective terms dispersion and
