A Review on Sensor Technologies, Control Approaches, and Emerging Challenges in Soft Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review provides an introspective of sensors and controllers in soft robotics. Initially describing the current sensing methods, then moving on to the control methods utilized, and finally ending with challenges and future directions in soft robotics focusing on the material innovations, sensor fusion, and embedded intelligence for sensors and ...

Analysis of pattern dynamics for a nonlinear model of the human cortex via bifurcation theories

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis examines the bifurcations, i.e., the emergent behaviours, for the Waikato cortical model under the influence of the gap-junction inhibitory diffusion D₂ (identified as the Turing bifurcation parameter) and the time-to-peak for hyperpolarising

Beam Deflection Measurement of Time and Polarization Resolved Nonlinear Refraction

open access: yes, 2013
We modify the photothermal beam deflection technique to study ultrafast optical nonlinearities. We measure the temporal and polarization dynamics of nonlinear refraction with sensitivity of λ/5500 while separating the isotropic and reorientational ...

Measurements of nonlinear refractive index in scattering media

open access: yesOptics Express, 2010
We have recently developed a spectral re-shaping technique to simultaneously measure nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption. In this technique, the information about the nonlinearities is encoded in the frequency domain, rather than in the spatial domain as in the conventional Z-scan method.

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Regularised Anisotropic Nonlinear Diffusion for Rendering Refraction in Volume Graphics

open access: yes, 2005
Rendering refraction in volume graphics requires smoothly distributed normals to synthesise good quality visual representations. Such refractive visualisation is more susceptible to noise in the data than visualisations that do not involve refraction. In

Waveguide Photoactuators: Materials, Fabrication, and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Waveguide photoactuators convert guided light into mechanical motion. Their tethered‐flexible design enables minimally invasive surgery and confined‐space robotics. This review aims to guide materials selection, device design, and system integration, accelerating the transition of waveguide photoactuators from laboratory prototypes to versatile ...

Feasibility of Residual Stress Nondestructive Estimation Using the Nonlinear Property of Critical Refraction Longitudinal Wave

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2017
Residual stress has significant influence on the performance of mechanical components, and the nondestructive estimation of residual stress is always a difficult problem.

Beam Deflection For Time-Resolved Measurement Of Nonlinear Refraction

open access: yes, 2013
We modify the photothermal beam deflection technique for the sensitive measurement of ultrafast nonlinear refraction (λ/5000 sensitivity to nonlinearly-induced phase changes).
