The origin of compression influences geometric instabilities in bilayers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Geometric instabilities in bilayered structures control the surface morphology in a wide range of biological and technical systems. Depending on the application, different mechanisms induce compressive stresses in the bilayer.

Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Dynamic Modelling and Experimental Investigation of an Active–Passive Variable Stiffness Actuator

open access: yesActuators
To overcome the limitations imposed by the low flexible angle of conventional robots, an active–passive variable stiffness elastic actuator (APVSA) is investigated and a nonlinear dynamic model for the APVSA is established, considering the factors of the

Identification and modelling of dynamic parameters for round link chains subject to axial loads

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
A round link chain subject to axial dynamic loads composes a nonlinear viscoelastic system. Unlike the classical pounding problems, the round link chain will not only suffer linear elastic deformation, but also nonlinear plastic or impacting deformation.

Kink-antikink asymmetry and impurity interactions in topological mechanical chains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We study the dynamical response of a diatomic periodic chain of rotors coupled by springs, whose unit cell breaks spatial inversion symmetry. In the continuum description, we derive a nonlinear field theory which admits topological kinks and antikinks as

Hybrid Auxetic Architectures: Integrating Curvature‐Driven Design for Enhanced Mechanical Tunability and Structural Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Curvature‐tuned auxetic lattices are designed, fabricated, and mechanically characterized to reveal how geometric curvature governs stretchability, stress redistribution, and Poisson's ratio evolution. Photoelastic experiments visualize stress pathways, while hyperelastic simulations quantify deformation mechanics.

Influence of the Bearing Thermal Deformation on Nonlinear Dynamic Characteristics of an Electric Drive Helical Gear System

open access: yesSensors, 2021
Based on the statics and quasi-statics analysis methods, the thermal deformation calculation model of a deep-groove ball bearing was constructed for the helical gear transmission system of a high speed electric drive, and the radial and axial bearing ...

A novel method for detecting the position of nonlinear components in multi-degree-of-freedom nonlinear systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Based on the Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs), a novel method is developed to detect the position of nonlinear components in MDOF nonlinear systems. The validity of this method is demonstrated by numerical studies.

Non-conventional phase attractors and repellers in weakly coupled autogenerators with hard excitation

open access: yes, 2017
In our earlier studies, we found the effect of non-conventional synchronization, which is a specific type of nonlinear stable beating in the system of two weakly coupled autogenerators with hard excitation given by generalized van der Pol-Duffing ...
