Downshift of d-states and the decomposition of silver halides

open access: yesMatter and Radiation at Extremes
The ionicity of ionic solids is typically characterized by the electronegativity of the constituent ions. Electronegativity measures the ability of electron transfer between atoms and is commonly considered under ambient conditions.

Development and Validation of a Next‐Generation Mechanistic Model of the Electric Arc Furnace

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study presents a next‐generation mechanistic model of the electric arc furnace (EAF). It describes equations for all crucial processes appearing during the steel‐recycling process in an EAF, i.e., thermal, mass, and chemical. The model was parameterized and validated using industrial EAF data.

Replacement of Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) -225 Solvent for Cleaning and Verification Sampling of NASA Propulsion Oxygen Systems Hardware, Ground Support Equipment, and Associated Test Systems [PDF]

open access: yes
Since the 1990's, when the Class I Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) chlorofluorocarbon-113 (CFC-113) was banned, NASA's rocket propulsion test facilities at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and Stennis Space Center (SSC) have relied upon ...

Reducing the use of Fossil Carbon and Fuels to Defossilize the Electric Steelmaking Route: Evaluation of the Effects of Alternative C‐Bearing Materials and Hydrogen in the Electric Arc Furnace

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The experiments and simulations demonstrate that, in general, alternative carbon sources can decrease fossil CO2 without adversely impacting EAF process and product. High plastics and tires ratios cause unsafe conditions and poor slag foaming. Hydrogen in EAF burners decreases CO2 but increases water vapor, which can raise the hydrogen content in ...

Agglomeration Behavior of Nonmetallic Particles on the Surface of Si‐Killed Liquid Steel Using HT‐CSLM: An In Situ Investigation

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The in situ agglomeration behavior of semisolid Al–silicate inclusions in Si‐killed steel is studied using high‐temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy. Particle motion and interparticle forces at the steel/argon interface are quantified and compared with a modified capillary interaction model.

Evaluation and prediction of long-term environmental effects of nonmetallic materials, second phase [PDF]

open access: yes
Changes in the functional properties of a number of nonmetallic materials were evaluated experimentally as a function of simulated space environments and to use such data to develop models for accelerated test methods useful for predicting such ...

Influence of Oxygen Contamination on the Genesis of Nonmetallic Inclusions in a Microalloyed Steel

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Oxygen contamination during melting of steels strongly affects the evolution of nonmetallic inclusions. Controlled remelting experiments, combined with SEM/EDS analysis and thermodynamic simulations, reveal how reoxidation promotes the transformation of alumina‐based inclusions into complex FeO–MnO oxides and other interactions.
