Analogies and differences between the logic behind statistical hypothesis testing and proofs by contradiction: What can we learn from them?

open access: yesTeaching Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Statistical hypothesis testing (SHT) is widely employed across numerous scientific disciplines, and a clear understanding of its underlying logic is essential for the broader scientific community. Here, drawing upon both epistemological and statistical perspectives, we aim to clarify—primarily for educational purposes—the logical relationship ...

COMPARISON OF CONFIDENCE INTERVALS FOR THE SURVIVAL FUNCTION IN THE PRESENCE OF RIGHT CENSORING COMPARACIÓN DE INTERVALOS DE CONFIANZA PARA LA FUNCIÓN DE SUPERVIVENCIA CON CENSURA A DERECHA

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2011
This work compares methods to find confidence interval for the survival function such as the resampling methods Bootstrap, applied to the Kaplan-Meier and Nelson-Aalen estimators.

Development and validation of a cephalic conformation scoring system for the domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Extreme cephalic conformation has been theorised to be associated with compromised health in rabbits. However, recognition and assessment of such phenotypes remain largely subjective. This study aimed to develop and validate a visual, semi‐quantitative system for head shape phenotype in rabbits.

Human‐Caused Leopard Deaths in Sri Lanka Are Concentrated in Central Highlands' Estate Mosaics: Evidence From 17 Years of Mortality Records 人为因素导致斯里兰卡豹死亡事件集中于中部高地种植园镶嵌景观:来自 17 年死亡记录的证据

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Human‐caused leopard deaths in Sri Lanka averaged 9.65 ± 4.5 records year−1 over 17 years (2008–2024; n = 164), with records highly clustered in the central highland mosaic ecosystem. Mortality was dominated by adult males and driven primarily by snaring in plantation landscapes, and indicating an increase approximately 0.7–0.8 deaths per year.

Aridity‐dependent regulation of water‐use efficiency by leaf vein traits across grassland communities

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Water transport is a fundamental constraint on plant growth in arid regions. Leaf vein architecture regulates carbon assimilation and transpiration through leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), thereby influencing ecosystem water‐use efficiency (WUE) via community‐level ...

Investigating the EKC and LCC Hypotheses for BRICS Countries: The Role of Economic Complexity in Environmental Degradation

open access: yesNatural Resources Forum, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The number of studies in literature examining the relationship between economic complexity and environment continues to increase. In those studies, either environmental degradation is represented by a limited indicator, or a traditional empirical method is preferred.

The Size Problem of Bootstrap Tests when the Null isNon- or Semiparametric El problema del tamaño de los contrastes bootstrap cuando la hipótesis nula es No- o semiparamétrica

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2010
In non- and semiparametric testing, the wild bootstrap is a standard method for determining the critical values of tests. If the null hypothesis is also semi- or nonparametric, then we know that at least asymptotically oversmoothing is necessary in the ...

Inference on state occupancy in covariate‐driven hidden Markov models

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are natural and popular tools for analysing animal behaviour based on movement, acceleration and other sensor data. In particular, these models make it possible to infer how the animal's decision‐making process interacts with internal and external drivers by relating the probabilities of switching between distinct ...

Cost‐effectiveness of in‐hospital motivational smoking cessation counselling and proactive referral to community‐based follow‐up

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aim In a randomised open‐label trial among hospitalised patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease, motivational smoking cessation counselling with proactive referral to community‐based follow‐up was more effective than brief cessation advice and written information, with 6‐month continuous abstinence rates of 49.5% vs. 24.5%
