Nonunion of the capitate

A case of nonunion of the capitate of a 13-year-old girl is reported. Autogenous iliac bone grafting obtained union. At the 2-year follow-up, she had no complaints and had full motion of the wrist.

Ununited fractures of the clavicle are rare, and when nonunion occurs the cause should be found. Of 18 cases of nonunion here studied, 4 were in the lateral third of the bone, and nonunion was explained by the rupture of the coracoclavicular ligament. When this ligament is intact, union is generally prompt.

Nonunion of the hook of the hamate: An argument for bone grafting the nonunion

A technique of bone grafting the ununited hook of the hamate is presented as an alternative to simple excision of the nonunion fragment. The procedure was successful in four patients. The advantages of preserving the hook of the hamate for the pulley effect on the flexor profundi are discussed.
