Do Fibula Nonunions Predict Later Tibia Nonunions?

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2013
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of fibula nonunion as a method for predicting tibia nonunion in the tibiofibula shaft fracture.Retrospective study.University hospital. From March 1998 to October 2008, 224 patients were enrolled. Among 224 patients, 153 patients were treated with intramedullary nail, 34 patients were treated with ...

Nonunion of the hook of the hamate: An argument for bone grafting the nonunion

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 1989
A technique of bone grafting the ununited hook of the hamate is presented as an alternative to simple excision of the nonunion fragment. The procedure was successful in four patients. The advantages of preserving the hook of the hamate for the pulley effect on the flexor profundi are discussed.

Nonunions of the humerus

Journal of Hand Therapy, 2005
Introduction : In this paper, the authors review the incidence, causes, and treatment of nonunion of the humerus based on the literature. They then discuss their management of humeral nonunions. Fractures of the humerus constitute approximately 5% to 8% of all fractures. Treatment varies according to location of the fracture.

Calcaneus Malunion and Nonunion

Foot and Ankle Clinics, 2007
Though the debate continues between operative interventions versus conservative therapy, there is significant evidence that the deformity that results from calcaneus malunions causes significant disability for the patient. Knowledge of the fracture patterns in the original calcaneal fracture aids in both understanding the deformity of the malunion and ...

Nonunions of the Forearm

2017
Nonunions of the forearm are rare, but do occur. Many people are able to function well in their daily life with a nonunion. However, a nonunion of the forearm can also result in disability and the inability to perform normal daily activities. For this purpose, nonunions are often treated surgically.

Nonunion of the Humeral Shaft

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1987
Retrospective review of records of 26 patients with nonunion of the humeral shaft revealed several factors frequently associated with the development of nonunion. The fractures were transverse and short oblique and treated per primam with hanging casts or open reduction. Surgical fixation was unstable. The types of nonunion were atrophic in 19 patients,

Nonunions of the Elbow

2002
Ununited fractures about the elbow represent uncommon, but complex, reconstructive problems. Skeletal union in anatomic alignment represents the best opportunity for younger, active individuals to regain function and maintain it long term. Stable fixation is difficult to achieve, but the techniques described herein have been used with good results ...

Malunions and Nonunions of the Forearm

Hand Clinics, 2007
Modern techniques allow for high rates of union in the treatment of diaphyseal forearm fractures. In the case of nonunion, addressing the biology and stability of the fracture will similarly yield high union rates, but slightly decreased functional outcomes.

Principles of Nonunions

2017
The management of nonunions can be very difficult. They have a significant impact on one’s function and can be debilitating. It requires a thorough understanding of the factors that can result in a nonunion. This includes patient factors as well as surgical factors. Nonunions can occur because of biological factors, mechanical factors, or both. Smoking
