Reconnue par N. Elias lui-même, l’influence de la psychanalyse de Sigmund Freud sur son œuvre n’est plus à démontrer. Cependant, la relation d’Elias à l’œuvre de Freud soulève de nombreuses questions. Si le sociologue s’est tourné vers elle pour étayer sa thèse sur le processus de civilisation, il n’a pas hésité à formuler diverses critiques.
