Birch Rust Spore Exposure and Upper Airway Symptom Dynamics in a Subarctic Region: Indications for a Novel Seasonal Allergen

open access: yesClinical and Translational Allergy, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Airway allergies affect 20%–30% of the global population, with pollen and fungal spores representing major environmental triggers. Although fungal spores are far more abundant than pollen, their allergenic role—particularly from phytopathogenic rust fungi such as birch rust (BR)—remains poorly understood.

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome and Phylogenetic Position of the Pacific Spiny Dogfish Squalus suckleyi (Squaliformes: Squalidae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
The Pacific spiny dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) is a North Pacific shark of conservation consern that until now lacked a complete mitochondrial genome. We report its first mitogenome (16,738 bp; 37 genes), assembled from PacBio HiFi reads and recover it as sister to S.

Effects of the HDAC6/8 Inhibitor MC1568, Alone and in Combination With Fluconazole, in Non‐Albicans Candida Species Infections

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
This study explores new antifungal strategies to combat non‐albicans Candida species. We tested clinically approved HDAC inhibitors—Vorinostat, Romidepsin, Tucidinostat—and the HDAC6/8‐selective MC1568, alone and with Fluconazole. The Fluconazole/MC1568 combination significantly enhanced antifungal activity and reduced biofilm formation.

Taxonomic reassessment of Tolpis (Asteraceae) in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos with description of new species

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract Tolpis (Asteraceae) is a recently diversified genus of flowering plants, centered in the Macaronesian region, where it exhibits striking morphological variation and high levels of endemism. In this study, we focus on the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores (Portugal).

Landscape configuration and soil properties shape ant‐mediated seed dispersal in tropical dry forest agricultural landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 95, Issue 8, Page 1476-1487, August 2026.
We show that ant‐mediated seed dispersal components respond differently to local soil conditions and landscape structure in Caatinga agricultural mosaics. Low‐intensity rainfed croplands maintained or enhanced seed removal compared to natural remnants, highlighting how small‐scale agriculture can sustain key ecological processes in human‐modified dry ...

Plant species richness is key for restoring grassland butterfly assemblages

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 8, August 2026.
The results indicate that successful restoration of grassland vegetation and butterflies is strongly linked. To fully restore target butterfly assemblages, future grassland restoration should aim to re‐establish and maintain plant species‐rich habitats by implementing high‐quality restoration methods.
