Radioimmunoassay of norethindrone: Serum levels of norethindrone in lactating women after insertion of a single silastic implant releasing norethindrone acetate

A specific radioimmunoassay was developed for the estimation of norethindrone levels in the serum of lactating women. A conjugate of norethindrone-3-BSA was synthesized and antiserum raised against it in rabbits. The antiserum showed high affinity (1.5 x 10(9)M/L) and titer and was specific. The sensitivity of the assay was 125 pg/ml serum.

Clinical evaluation of norethindrone acetate in fertility control

A clinical evaluation of 300 Mexican women accumulating 5902 treatment cycles representing 454 woman-years with 4 mg norethindrone acetate and .05 mg ethinyl estradiol (Anovlar) is presented. Each woman was instructed to take 1 tablet daily for 20 consecutive days beginning on Cycle Day 5. Anovlar was virtually 100% effective.

Norethindrone with Estrogen as an Oral Contraceptive

The major properties and contraceptive efficacy of progestational hormones are reviewed. The effectiveness of these hormones is compared with that of other modern methods of contraception and results of a study involving the use of norethindrone in low dosage in conjunction with a small quantity of estrogen are presented.

In 24 healthy women between the ages of 19 and 35 years who had not used oral contraceptive preparations for at least 60 days, it was found that the smaller the particle size of norethindrone (NET) administered, the higher was the plasma NET level obtained.

Long-Term Administration of Norethindrone in Fertility Control

Fertility control by cyclic norethindrone administration was studied in 364 women over a period of 32 months, for a total of 6,062 cycles. The agent was effective, harmless, and more acceptable than any other method available. Subsequent fertility was unimpaired.

The endometrial morphology of 25 women and the conception rate of 41 women were studied after the discontinuation of use of a combined norethindrone-estrogen oral contraceptive (OC). The endometria of women using the OC for less than 1 year reverted immediately and totally to a normal state and were highly receptive to implantation.

Bioavailability of norethindrone in women and rabbits after administration of norethindrone acetate through the subcutaneous route
