Reconsidering Resolutions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In Willing, Wanting, Waiting, Richard Holton lays out a detailed account of resolutions, arguing that they enable agents to resist temptation. Holton claims that temptation often leads to inappropriate shifts in judgment, and that resolutions are a ...

Graphene‐Inspired Mono‐Elemental 2D Materials: Synthesis, Properties, and Potential Applications of Xenes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the recent advances in mono‐elemental 2D materials, or Xenes, including their synthesis strategies, theoretical guidance, and stability challenges. It highlights emerging approaches such as deep learning‐assisted design with encapsulation techniques and heterostructure for scalable production and practical applications in ...

Facile Single‐Nanocomposite 4D Bioprinting of Dynamic Hydrogel Constructs with Thickness‐Controlled Gradient

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel and facile thickness‐modulated 4D bioprinting approach using a smart bioink made of gelatin, GelMA, and MXene. Leveraging computational models, it creates living constructs with programmable unidirectional and bidirectional curvatures under a single UV exposure.

Against the new Cartesian Circle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In two recent papers, Michael Della Rocca accuses Descartes of reasoning circularly in the Fourth Meditation. This alleged new circle is distinct from, and more vicious than, the traditional Cartesian Circle arising in the Third Meditation.

Negation, expressivism, and intentionality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Many think that expressivists have a special problem with negation. I disagree. For if there is a problem with negation, I argue, it is a problem shared by those who accept some plausible claims about the nature of intentionality.

Pre‐Torsion Tubular Metamaterials: Multi‐Effect Integration for Advanced Functional Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Through a pre‐torsion design paradigm, the authors design and fabricate a class of multi‐effect mechanical metamaterial that synergistically integrates compression‐torsion and auxetic behaviors over an extensive strain range, and their formation mechanisms are quantitatively analyzed and elucidated via experiments and finite element methods.

Epistemological Implications of Relativism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Relativists about knowledge ascriptions think that whether a particular use of a knowledge-ascribing sentence, e.g., “Keith knows that the bank is open” is true depends on the epistemic standards at play in the assessor’s context—viz., the context in ...

If You Can't Change What You Believe, You Don't Believe It [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
I develop and defend the view that subjects are necessarily psychologically able to revise their beliefs in response to relevant counter-evidence. Specifically, subjects can revise their beliefs in response to relevant counter-evidence, given their ...

Understanding the Interplay Between Thermal Activation, Diffusion, and Phase Segregation of Molecular Dopants Blended with Polymeric Semiconductors

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
The use of air stable but thermally labile molecules provides an efficient strategy for the N‐type doping of organic semiconductors with relatively low electron affinities. Design criteria for efficient dopants should also take into account diffusion and phase segregation that cannot be decoupled from thermally activated doping.
