Periodicities in the north-south asymmetry of solar activity

Solar Physics, 1989
This paper tries to cast additional evidence on the proposed periodic behaviour of the N-S asymmetry in sudden disappearances (SD) of solar prominences (Vizoso and Ballester, 1987). We have performed a Blackman-Tukey power spectrum of the values of the SD N-S asymmetry and the results shows a significant peak, above 95% confidence level, at 12.4 years,

The north-south coronal asymmetry with inferred magnetic quadrupole

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1999
The quiet corona at times close to solar minimum shows a striking north-south asymmetry which suggests that neither dipole-like nor octupole-like fields are sufficient to describe the global coronal magnetic field. We believe that such phenomena reflect the asymmetry of the intrinsic magnetic field of the sun as a star; this weak field is usually ...

North-south asymmetry in storm time variation of f0F2

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1968
Abstract The study of Dst ( f 0 F 2) variations at equatorial and subtropical stations at different longitude zones for 1951–1956, show that at equatorial stations of any in the zones the variation indicates an increase of f 0 F 2 during the main phase.

On the north-south asymmetry in the solar wind

Solar Physics, 1969
The orientations of tangential discontinuities seen by Mariner 4 are interpreted as implying a sector dependent asymmetry in the north-south component of the solar-wind flow. In two sectors, fast solar wind streams had a southward motion relative to slow streams, in one sector the reverse obtained, and in the remaining sector the asymmetry was not ...

North-south asymmetry in solar, interplanetary, and geomagnetic indices

Astrophysics, 2012
Data of hourly interplanetary plasma (field magnitude, solar wind speed, and ion density), solar (sunspot number, solar radio flux), and geomagnetic indices (Kp, Ap) over the period 1970-2010, have been used to examine the asymmetry between the solar field north and south of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS).

The global temperature anomaly and solar North-South asymmetry

Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences, 2012
We investigate whether the global temperature anomaly is associated with the solar North-South asymmetry using data archived approximately for five solar cycles. We are motivated by both the accumulating evidence for the connection of Galactic cosmic-rays (GCRs) to the cloud coverage and recent finding of the association of GCR influx and the solar ...

Chaotic behavior of the north-south asymmetry of sunspots?

Solar Physics, 1996
North-south asymmetry in the distribution of sunspots was examined. Weak correlations between north-south asymmetry and sunspot number were found in several time lags. Higuchi's fractal dimension (1988) was calculated to evaluate irregularity in north-south asymmetry.

Stochastic properties in North–South asymmetry of sunspot area

New Astronomy, 2008
Abstract We examine the observed sunspot area data exploring stochastic properties of the North–South asymmetry of the sunspot area by comparing results of the observational data with those derived from a simplified mathematical model, in which the asymmetry of the sunspot area is characterized by random noise superposed on a slowly varying ...
