In the course of a study conducted in 2015–2019, it was found that there is a permanent center of dirofilariasis in the North-Western Caucasus, which is actively supported by domestic dogs and cats, as well as wild predatory mammals. Dogs in the region have two types of dirofilaria cardionematoda Dirofilaria immitis and subcutaneous Dirofilaria repens.
