Floating debris in the Ligurian Sea, north-western Mediterranean

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2003
Results from visual sightings of large floating debris are presented, taken in the Ligurian Sea, a sub-basin of the north-western Mediterranean Sea which belongs to the recently stated "Cetacean Sanctuary". Data have been collected during three oceanographic cruises, during the summer of 1997 and 2000. Results for the 1997 data suggest a debris density

Inversions Beneath the thermocline in the north-western Mediterranean

Deutsche Hydrographische Zeitschrift, 1973
Vertical temperature traces in the north-western Mediteranean show remarkably leafy structures at depths between 100 m and 300 m. The individual layers are stable over several days. Their horizontal extension is larger than 20 nm. The thickness amounts to 25–50 m.

Vegetation dynamics in north-western Mediterranean regions: Instability of the Mediterranean bioclimate

Plant Biosystems - An International Journal Dealing with all Aspects of Plant Biology, 2005
Pollen and plant macrofossil records from a selection of sites in Spain, France and Italy are used to explore the origin and the development of the Mediterranean vegetation. The role of evergreen and summergreen taxa is discussed. The expansion of sclerophyllous trees during the Pleistocene interglacials is well correlated with the orbital forcing ...

Pelagic–benthic coupling in a subtidal system of the North-Western Mediterranean

Chemistry and Ecology, 2007
Suspended particulate matter, zooplankton, and macrobenthos dynamics were investigated in a shallow area of the Ligurian Sea (north-west Mediterranean) characterized by wide temporal variability over an annual cycle. As indicated by multivariate analyses, the seasonal dynamics can be summarized as follows: (1) a late winter–early spring phytoplankton ...

SIMILARITIES IN THE SURNAMES OF ISLAND AND CONTINENTAL POPULATIONS OF THE NORTH-WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN AREA

Journal of Biosocial Science, 2008
SummaryThis paper compares the structures of the surnames of 75 municipal populations living in six north-western Mediterranean regions. Its purpose is to unravel the relations between the local populations in Corsica and Sardinia and the links between these populations and those living in the Italian and French continental territory.

Tectonics and deep structure of the north-western Mediterranean Basin

Marine and Petroleum Geology, 1995
Crustal data, derived from geophysical experiments in the Valencia Trough and the Provencal Basin, are compared and integrated in the framework of the north-western Mediterranean Basin. This basin is a Neogene extensional rift, located within a region of compression between the European and African plates. The northern margin of the Valencia Trough and

Monitoring Sea Level by Radar Altimeter and CGPS in the North-Western Mediterranean

IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008
Sea level is an environmental variable which is widely recognised as being important in many scientific disciplines as a control parameter for coastal dynamical processes or climate processes in the coupled atmosphere-ocean systems, as well as engineering applications.
