Contrasting the synoptic drivers of the UK heatwaves of 1976, 2003, 2018 and 2022
Weather, EarlyView.UK summer heatwaves are dictated by the polar jet stream position and sea surface temperature (SST) variability, affecting the Summer North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO) index. Extreme rainfall in Madeira: the June 2023 weather event
Weather, EarlyView.This study investigates the meteorological conditions behind the extreme precipitation event on 6 June 2023 over Madeira Island, Portugal. The event set a national daily record of 497.5mm and was unusual for occurring in early summer, as most extremes in the region occur in winter.

Local Ecological Knowledge Reveals the Distribution of Cryptic Nocturnal Wildlife
Wildlife Letters, EarlyView.Many nocturnal animals are difficult to study because they are rarely seen, including nocturnal primates, galagos and pottos, in West Africa. Working with over 600 people in 52 villages in southern Guinea‐Bissau, we found that communities frequently recognized galagos by their red eyeshine and distinctive calls, while pottos were not known.

Mobile consumers influence the shoreward edge of intertidal seagrass ecosystems
Journal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.Ecological paradigms suggest that the environmentally stressful edge of a habitat is determined by physical factors. The work finds that, counter to these paradigms, an environmentally stressful edge can also be impacted by biotic interactions and are more complex than suggested.
