Pythiosis in cats in northeastern Brazil

The epidemiological, clinical and anatomopathological aspects of pythiosis in cats in northeastern Brazil are described. From January 2000 to December 2018 the Laboratory of Animal Pathology of the Federal University of Campina Grande received 1928 tissue samples of cats, three of which were diagnosed as pythiosis.

Filarioids infecting dogs in northeastern Brazil

Species of filarial nematodes belonging to the genera Dirofilaria and Acanthocheilonema are recognised as common parasites of dogs throughout the world. Recently, other filarioids featured by the presence of dermal microfilariae (e.g., Onchocerca lupi and Cercopithifilaria spp.) have been recognised in Europe.

Breastfeeding practices in northeastern Brazil

Of 87 children followed up during a longitudinal study of infant health and feeding practices in a small city in northeastern Brazil, only 1 in 10 were still receiving breastfeeding exclusively at the age of 1 month. Their mothers were interviewed to identify factors influencing early introduction of supplementary feeding.
