Holocene vegetation change and fire–plant diversity shifts in Mediterranean France

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Changes in fire activity are recognized as a major threat to biodiversity and vegetation communities across the Mediterranean Basin. However, long‐term fire–vegetation interactions remain poorly investigated. Here, we combine a high‐resolution charcoal record with pollen data from the “Étang des Aulnes” lake (southern France) to reconstruct ...

Farmers versus wolves: how geographic, social cognitive, and experiential factors influence attitudes towards a predator in Italy

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
A survey of 426 Italian farmers reveals that tolerance toward wolves varies geographically, with northern regions showing less acceptance. Negative intentions were linked to poor knowledge, while use of preventive methods fostered positive beliefs. These findings highlight the need for region‐specific, socially informed wolf management strategies in ...

Cyclic imines in shellfish and ascidians in the northern Adriatic Sea

open access: yesFood Additives & Contaminants: Part B, 2020
The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of the most representative cyclic imines (CIs) gymnodimine (GYM), pinnatoxin G (PnTX-G), and 13-desmethyl SPX C (SPX1) in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819) (n = 416), European oysters (Ostrea edulis Linnaeus, 1758) (n = 104), Queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis ...

Stand Age, Standard Retention Density and Site Conditions as Drivers of Shoot Biomass Accumulation in Mediterranean Oak Coppices

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mediterranean oak coppices represent an important fuelwood resource in Central Italy, but management decisions are often constrained by limited quantitative evidence on the relative importance of stand development, standard retention, site conditions, and climate in driving shoot biomass accumulation.

Repeated Pleistocene Permafrost Episodes in the Western Pannonian Basin

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Concerning the study of past periglacial processes, the Pannonian Basin is a key area as it contains the southernmost frost polygons found in Central Europe. The presence or absence of permafrost is still, however, a matter of debate, and data on the timing of frost action are also scarce.

First Report of the Thermophilic Thalassoma Pavo (Linnaeus, 1758) on the Central Adriatic Coast of Italy, in Abruzzo

open access: yesBiology
The Trabocchi Coast in the Chieti district of the mid-Adriatic (Italy) is one of the few rocky areas within the General Fisheries Commission GSA 17, alongside Mount Conero (Ancona 43°00′01″ N 13°52′13″ E) and the small San Nicola Rock (Ascoli Piceno; 43 ...

Turbulence observations in the Gulf of Trieste under moderate wind forcing and different water column stratification [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2016
The oceanographic campaign CARPET2014 (Characterizing Adriatic Region Preconditionig EvenTs), (30 January–4 February 2014) collected the very first turbulence data in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) under moderate wind (average wind ...

Distribution of surface-active substances in the northern Adriatic Sea [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Chemistry, 2001
Spatial distribution and seasonal variability of surfactant activity (SA) of seawater were studied in the Northern Adriatic Sea and compared to the temperature and salinity patterns in the two year period from February 1998 to January 2000, based on monthly surveys.

Dry intrusions and warm‐core development in Medicanes: Insights from a multi‐case analysis and the peculiar evolution of Ianos

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Mediterranean tropical‐like cyclones show a clear seasonality, with September cyclones exhibiting the deepest convection and Ianos representing the most extreme case. While one or more dry intrusions are typically detected during the cyclone life cycle, Ianos instead features two much weaker descending airflows.

Isolation, Insularity and Resilience: A Review of the Geophysical, Socioeconomic, and Environmental Vulnerabilities of Gran Canaria and Lesvos Islands for Policy Interventions to Global Change

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The dynamic nature of small islands being geographically isolated and their perceived connectedness with global networks complicates research attempts to draw general conclusions on whether insularity leads to marginalization or strengthens their resilience for sustainable development.
