Is chamois hybridization in the northern Dinaric Mountains an important factor for horn development?

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2018, Issue 1, Page 1-8, January 2018., 2018
The Dinaric region is the natural habitat of the Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra and Balkan chamois Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica. Recently confirmed, these two subspecies hybridize in the contact zone on Mts Velebit, coastal Croatia ...

First report on the occurrence of Vibrio cholerae nonO1/nonO139 in natural and artificial lakes and ponds in Serbia: Evidence for a long-distance transfer of strains and the presence of Vibrio paracholerae. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep, 2023
Abstract Vibrio cholerae are natural inhabitants of specific aquatic environments. Strains not belonging to serogroups O1 and O139 are usually unable to produce cholera toxin and cause cholera. However, non‐toxigenic V. cholerae (NTVC) are able to cause a variety of mild‐to‐severe human infections (via seafood consumption or recreational activities ...

Seascape Genetics and Distinct Intraspecific Diversification of the Decapod Nephrops norvegicus in the Adriatic Sea. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In the present study, the impact of biogeographical boundaries on the phylogeographical and demographic population status of Nephrops norvegicus was investigated within the Adriatic Sea, addressing important genetic indices for decapod functional conservation management.

Intrinsic and environmental drivers of pairwise cohesion in wild Canis social groups. [PDF]

open access: yesEcology
Abstract Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group‐level processes such as subgroup formation and fission–fusion dynamics.

Rural Landscapes of Roman (northern) Liburnia: Diachronic Development of Organisation and the Economy in Extra-Urban Territories in the Light of Recent Archaeological Research

open access: yesRadovi Zavoda za hrvatsku povijest Filozofskoga fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, 2022
The archaeology of Roman rural landscapes in the province of Dalmatia, and espe¬cially northern Liburnia, has until recently focused on single-site or single-monument analyses, allowing for only geographically patchy and chronologically limited conclu ...

Phenotypic correlates of genetic divergence suggest at least three species in the complex of Dianthus virgineus (Caryophyllaceae)

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 72, Issue 5, Page 1019-1033, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Dianthus virgineus encompasses a very complex taxonomic group (traditionally called D. sylvestris group) including an array of units of doubtful taxonomic rank and value. Recent work identified three genetic lineages within this complex that showed strong genetic isolation, and clear geographical boundaries (i.e., “Alpine”, “Balkan”, and ...

Deformation Sequence and Paleofluids in Carbonate Buckle Folds Under Transpression (Pag Anticline, External Dinarides, Croatia)

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 42, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Contractional deformation structures at the front of transpressional orogens display complex three‐dimensional geometries deviating from the interpretative templates commonly applied in thrust belts. Accordingly, detailed constraints on deformation patterns and associated paleofluid circulation are desirable, especially for fracture geometry ...

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Fritillaria meleagris

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 7, Page 1704-1726, July 2022., 2022
Fritillaria meleagris occurs in floodplain species‐rich hay meadows in the British Isles, it has been also planted in meadows, woodlands and orchards. In continental Europe and further east to Altai Mountains in Siberia, the species is native occurring in woodlands and meadows along the river valleys, where soil moisture is high in spring.

Nephrops norvegicus in the Adriatic Sea: Connectivity modeling, essential fish habitats, and management area network

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 30, Issue 4, Page 349-365, July 2021., 2021
Abstract Knowledge of connectivity among subpopulations is fundamental in the identification of the appropriate geographical scales for stock status evaluation and management, the identification of areas with greater retention rates, and space‐based fisheries management.

Astrocytes in stress accumulate lipid droplets

open access: yesGlia, Volume 69, Issue 6, Page 1540-1562, June 2021., 2021
Main points Astroglial lipid droplets are dynamic organelles with confined mobility. Lipid droplet turnover is important for astrocyte survival/proliferation. Stressed astrocytes accumulate lipid droplets likely to provide energy and reduce lipotoxicity.
